Admin Post: Help!

Hi everyone! [livejournal.com profile] ds_recsredux has been on a sort of impromptu hiatus, mostly because [livejournal.com profile] brooklinegirl and I have been INSANELY busy lately and honestly haven't had the time. Also, we have been brainstorming new ideas for the comm. While the rec challenge format is great, it seems to be difficult to sustain over a long period of time, and we want to keep the comm vital and fun!

We have a few ideas to throw out:

1) A format somewhat like [livejournal.com profile] stargateficrec, where people volunteer to rec a pairing or character for a week or more, and post a bunch of recs.

2) Go back to the good old days of [livejournal.com profile] ds_recs, where people are assigned a day every week for a month, and they rec fic or episodes or art or something else.

3) Something that [livejournal.com profile] brooklinegirl and I have not thought of, because are brains are FRIED.

We are also willing, if you have a great idea that you want to run with, to give up the comm to some temporary new mods to do something interesting. We are easy! Um. Yeah.

So, this is an open forum. Tell us what you want and what you'd like to see the comm look like in the future. We would GREATLY appreciate it!

I can't really comment on option 1 because I've never been in Stargate fandom, but I did like the way[livejournal.com profile] ds_recs was done.

I like option 2, because it reduces the stress to produce something daily. Reccers can set up their posts ahead of time, so that even if RL intrudes, they can still get their recs in. You could choose a theme for the month of recs or let the individual reccers talk about what moves them as fans of the show as well as fan-produced stories, art, essays or meta.

On the other hand, if you guys need a break for a while, I'll help with mod duties. There are a few themes I would like to see explored — favorite plotty fic, favorite crossovers, favorite first time fics, favorite h/c and so on.

Um, I don't have any suggestions because I knew to all this, I just wanted to say that I am glad you are still around, cause I was really missing this. Thanks for all the work you have done so far. It really has been great.

First -- I love this comm! As someone new to the DS fandom, it's been a goldmine. *much love*

I don't know that I have concrete suggestions, but here are some of my thoughts around reccing in this and other comms. (I've recced often for [livejournal.com profile] stargateficrec, and it's one of my favorite communities.)

The themes that have come up so far have been awesome -- I've found several instant favorites. The one limitation is that any fic written or found after that week can't be included. If would-be reccers can volunteer the theme they want to cover, with old or new challenges fair game, then additional fics in old challenges can be recced. (Dief! ;-)

The idea of reccers having a week, or one-day-a-week over a month is great. Stargateficrecs uses a full month for each reccer, which makes sense considering the size of the fandom (two shows, ten and three+ years of canon respectively, and a huge slew of characters), but the recs themselves generally total only 4 to 8 recs per volunteer.

Love love love the idea of adding art, meta, etc. to the recs!

Sorry, I am about as helpful as a doughnut. But, YAY you!

Could you have a mixture of things? i.e.
For the first two weeks per month, say, have a number of special reccers in the way that the old ds_recs worked, and then the third week of the month switch to have themed recs (as on here), with the final week being an 'amnesty' fic rec, where anyone can rec anything you like?

That way, it opens it up for everyone in every format.

Or would that be too much moderating work?

Hiya. I haven't been to either of those two rec comms, but I do like the way this one is run now because you get a handle on the entire popluation of dS fic thematically. But, whatever way you guys wanna go, I can offer my help to support/administrate the comm since I don't have much going on this time of the year.

Hi. I don't have any brilliant ideas, sorry. It is hard to keep challenges going like that. Maybe you could extend the time of each challenge?

Also, I wanted to say that I don't see the point of doing something more like ds_recs. That journal still exists and could be revived if that was what you wanted to do. I thought the idea of this community was to do something different. I think it succeeds by being set up differently, and with different aims.

I don't mean to sound negative - I think this is an excellent community, and you both have done a great job.

I'm sorry, I'm suggestion-free, being not that familiar with how these things usually work.

But I did want to tell you that this is a WONDERFUL community--I just came into the fandom a few months ago and this was such a great resource. Thanks for all the work.

I really like the current format, and have found some lovely stories here. However, if it were open to tweaking, maybe opening it up to two weeks instead of three and increasing the maximum number of recs allowed per post? I'd also enjoy seeing icons, vids and meta recced as well.

I don't particularly have any earth-shatteringly amazing ideas, but if you need help running the community I'd be happy to pitch in. I've read and enjoyed so much great dS fic over the years; I feel like I should try to give back a little to such a wonderful fandom.
