I haven't yet read "Fall", so thanks for that! And yes, "that's where all the gangsters live" is the perfect newbie fic (and fic in general). It is a love letter to Ray and to Chicago and, in a lot of ways, to the fandom. When I first read it I told minervacat that it read like the urban tales of great authors who really know and love their cities - Andrew Vachss and New York, James Ellroy and L.A. Even though, yeah, it's not so much a noir story about murder and corruption as it is a celebration of Chicago, but...well, she thought it was a flattering comparison :-)
