DS Match Fic: The Harder They Fall

Title: The Harder They Fall
Author: [livejournal.com profile] secretlybronte
Pairing: Fraser/Kowalski
Rating: NC-17
Length: 22,500 words
Why I'm reccing this fic: This was posted on the first day of the Match, and to me it captured what Team Reality is all about: in real life, actions have consequences.

At the start of this story, Fraser gets a head injury while pursuing a suspect. The story avoids the easy h/c formula to dig deeply into what the repercussions might be, and how Ray and Fraser would deal with them. The character voices are perfect, and there are great casefic aspects, including a glimpse of Levon running a rec center.

Check it out!

"What the hell were you thinking? You think I don't know how to call for back-up, so that you go running up some rickety fire escape? You think you can't die like everybody else?"

Fraser looked over in shock. "I'm afraid my primary concern at that point was apprehending the suspect."

"Yeah? Well, me? My 'primary concern' is not having a dead partner. Me? I go to work and I think to myself, 'Ray, it is a nice thing you have here, having a partner with whom you can share your day-to-day endeavors." What I do not think, Fraser—what I absolutely do not ever think—is 'Ray, it is a nice thing to have a partner so that you can go to his funeral.' I do not think that, Fraser!"

"Ray! I didn't intend to fall!"

"So what? You never do," Ray said.

In the back of his mind, he could still hear the sound Fraser had made when they had set his wrist at the hospital. It was horrible, a stifled yelp that had made Fraser turn his head away in shame after he had uttered it. It was the sort of sound Dief had made at the end, every time Fraser had gotten up to go somewhere and Dief had tried to follow. Ray didn't ever want to hear Fraser make a sound like that again. He could feel his anger at Fraser building. He pounded the palm of his hand on the steering wheel a couple of times, trying to make it go away.

The Harder They Fall.
