Title: And these are all for you
Author: [livejournal.com profile] innocentsmith
Pairing: Fraser/Kowalski, Fraser/other canon characters
Rating: PG
Length: 8200
Why I'm reccing this fic: I'm so impressed that this seems to be the author's first due South story. It offers an insightful perspective on Fraser, and how he tries to make sense of people around him. I love how the fairy tales he read as a child affected him, and how he wrestles with the question of what makes a person attractive. The writing is sometimes poetic and beautiful, and sometimes strikingly funny, and very much Fraser.

Also, the Martha section alone would have been enough to make me love it.

Title: The Harder They Fall
Author: to be revealed
Pairing: Fraser/Kowalski
Rating: NC-17
Length: 22,500 words
Why I'm reccing this fic:

This story takes what it almost a cliché - Fraser gets hurt while pursuing a suspect - and transforms it into something real. It never gets too sentimental, but stays very true to both characters. And while I can understand Fraser here, I love RayK here, strong and brave and scared and so very himself.

Why I'm reccing this fic:

This story takes all the whimsical and strange things about due South out in the light and lets the characters comment on it. It's almost meta-esque, but the story never stops being a story. It is in turns hilariously funny and heart-breaking. And I love the ending. Brilliant!

Why I'm reccing this fic:

Because I loved it. Warm and comfortable and hopeful and full of love. And full of the difficulties that can plague parents trying to raise their children. Although there's love among them not all is perfect. And while it's not exactly like my relationship with my parents, I can see things there that reminds me of it. It rings so very true to me.

Title: Lift
Author: [livejournal.com profile] spuffyduds
Pairing: K/V, F/K/V
Rating: R
Length: 6,200 words
Why I'm reccing this fic: There are lots of things to like about this story. It's the first wing-fic I've seen that captures the creepiness of the concept, as it slots neatly into Ray's nightmares of being an inhuman freak. Fraser's reaction when he realizes that his Rays are together is strikingly in character.

But the thing that makes me keep coming back and re-reading 'Lift' is the author's vision of Ray Vecchio, post-Vegas. This is a man who knows what he wants, and doesn't give a damn what other people think. He's cautious yet centered, loving and confident, completely ignoring Kowalski's fucked-up boundaries to transform the thing between them into an actual relationship. The idea that Vecchio's time undercover could allow him to grow into THIS person is wonderfully hopeful, and the entire story leaves me with a warm glow.

Why I'm reccing this fic: Because deep, dark secrets of fic preferences don't last long when you're reccing stuff to people, I might as well confess to another: I love kidfic. I love my favorite characters being happy, and I love big, tight-knit, not-necessarily-blood-related families, so a well-done combination of the two gives me the warm fuzzies. Team Reality's last mystery author rocks the kidfic hard: everything about Ray and Fraser flying half-blind through the ordeal of raising their three daughters feels honest, at least to my inexperienced self, and <SENTIMENTALITY ALERT> it makes me appreciate my mom even more (which, by this point, is honestly like dumping a glass of water into the ocean to make it wetter). </SENTIMENTALITY> I also got the sense of a lot of family backstory without feeling overwhelmed by exposition, which is always good but especially in shorter stories like this one. Get thee hence to share my warm fuzzies, or check the excerpt if you really need swaying on the whole sentimental parents thing.

Title: I can see the stars from a million miles
Author: it's a mystery
Pairing: Fraser/Kowalski
Rating: PG-13
Length: 7300 words
Why I'm reccing this story: In honor of our electricity finally being restored (what's the point of living in the Midwest if the hurricanes are going to get you anyway?), I've selected a story that, as well as being a prime example of the sheer weirdness Team Whimsy is capable of, gave me a bit of extra happiness because I'd finally seen Starman earlier this month and so had that whole improbably scenario pretty fresh in my memory. Beneath the crack it's pretty sad that the aliens' plot nearly goes off without a hitch, but otherwise this fic is a testament to the glory of crack. Everything that happens? Half Huey and Dewey's fault.

I can prove it. )

Why I'm reccing this fic:

There's so much packed into this short story, yet it never feels crowded and it flows beautifully. I love the use of Stella here, her 'outsider!pov' into this relationship, and how she is a completely human and real character here. Contrasted to this is the development of the Fraser/Kowalski/Vecchio relationship. Wonderful and rich.

Why I'm reccing this fic:

I don't think this story can be recced too often. Sharp and poignant and real in a way that isn't affected by 'reality' or 'whimsy'. Brilliant and sad and hopeful. This story gives up its secrets slowly, and while a second reading isn't required I can only recommend it to see how all weaves so beautifully together.

Title: The Harder They Fall
Author: [livejournal.com profile] secretlybronte
Pairing: Fraser/Kowalski
Rating: NC-17
Length: 22,500 words
Why I'm reccing this fic: This was posted on the first day of the Match, and to me it captured what Team Reality is all about: in real life, actions have consequences.

At the start of this story, Fraser gets a head injury while pursuing a suspect. The story avoids the easy h/c formula to dig deeply into what the repercussions might be, and how Ray and Fraser would deal with them. The character voices are perfect, and there are great casefic aspects, including a glimpse of Levon running a rec center.

Title: Five Times Ray Kowalski Was Ashamed of His Dick and One Time He Wasn't
Author: [livejournal.com profile] j_s_cavalcante
Pairing: Kowalski/Stella, Fraser/Kowalski
Rating: NC-17
Length: 22,600 words
Why I'm reccing this fic: Ever feel really, really glad you don't have a dick? You will after reading this.

This story runs through Ray Kowalski's life, from the time he tried going naked for realism when the big kids made him play an Indian in Cowboys and Indians, up to the present day. As a teenager, Ray struggles with his freakishly big dick that gets hard all the time, even sometimes around other guys.

This story is funny and heart-warming, stressful and deliciously porny. The author nails the anxiety of trying to fit in, and watching Ray try to deal with his asshole friends will make you fall in love with him all over again. Did I mention the long and scorchingly hot sex scene with Fraser? Go check it out!

Author: [livejournal.com profile] caersmane
Pairing: Kowalski/Vecchio, with hints of others
Rating: PG-13
Length: 4,500 words
Why I'm reccing this fic: This is an incredibly complex piece, that gives us a world radically changed, dangerous, charged with uncontrolled magical energies. Constable Fraser is a Medium, holed up in the Consulate in a nearly deserted Chicago. Kowalski and Vechio are partners. Kowalski has a secret, and a job to do.

There is love, guilt, passion, and religion, all judged by a mysterious They. I want more people to read this story, because people's responses to it have varied wildly. Some find the ending hopeful. It made me blindingly angry. And I want to see what the rest of you think.

Author: Team Reality Member
Pairing: Fraser/Kowalski
Rating: R
Length: 3800
Why I'm reccing this fic: I love established relationship fics set in the future. I like the reassurance that Ray and Fraser make things work. This story leaves me no doubt as to the strength of their relationship, b ut that doesn't mean everything is perfect. We drop in on Ray and Fraser as their youngest child is about to turn 16, and Ray reflects on their life as parents. They weren't prefect parents, their adopted daughters did not all leave their pasts behind and embrace their new parents with no reservations. There are fights and estrangements and hurt feelings, but most of all their is love. Rays memories are filled with love for Fraser and for their family. And that love means hope.

Why I'm reccing this fic:

Why I'm reccing this fic:

There are a lot of difficult themes addressed in this story - and no, it's not an 'issue' fic - but it's done without melodrama. I love the little glimpses into a very mature and complex relationship, and how they make it despite all the complications work.

Title: Want
Author: Team Whimsy Member
Pairing: Fraser/Kowalski
Rating: PG
Length: 4000
Why I'm reccing this fic: Whimsy in this fic is part of everyday life. Some people have extraordinary abilities, and while you can sense that is critical to this story, just why isn't revealed right away. The threads of this story are woven together wonderfully. Images of a blond man Fraser can't forget, an encounter with a woman who looks like Victoria that made me understand her place in Fraser's life in a way I never have before. And when it all comes together, it's perfect and breathtaking and leaves you aching for more. And once you know the truth, you can go back and see all the places it was brilliantly hinted at.

Why I'm reccing this fic: Lieutenant Welsh has always been the heart of the 2-7. The story shows him looking after first Vecchio, then Kowalski, and finally Fraser, as they return from their CotW adventures, all a bit damaged in shipping.

Why I'm reccing this fic: This fic is absolutely adorable. Fraser starts acting all shifty when they find signs of an otter at their crime scene. Ray, sweet and impulsive fellow that he is, decides to rescue the otter from the zoo lady's trap. And then things get delightfully whimsical.

Title: Next July We Collide with Mars
Author: TBA
Pairing: Vecchio/Kowalski
Rating: R
Length: 14,700 words
Why I'm reccing this fic: When Fraser ups and leaves town with a woman whom he doesn't introduce to anyone - and when he drops Dief off with Maggie and takes "emergency leave" without explaining why - it's only natural for the people who care about him to worry. The precedent, after all, is not good.

What follows is the very best sort of roadtrip: a series of tense, snarky, nervy snapshots of exactly how Ray Vecchio and Ray Kowalski would react if they were stuck trekking across Canada together to save Fraser from himself. Despite the tension caused by worrying about what they'll find at the end of the trail - and I was quite worried - this is also one of the funniest stories I've read in weeks. When you're driving, you don't always get time to process the things you see out the window; some of the best parts of this story happen in those sorts of flashes and can only be put together with more time and a bit of extrapolation. My favorite occurs once the canoe required by the challenge prompt ("It's been a long time since I kayaked through the sewers") is finally deployed, but I could have chosen any number of moments that, while perfectly clear in the text, invite the reader to supply explanation or context.

The voices are fantastic: Maggie, Fraser, and the rest sound exactly the way you'd expect them to, and the author has really nailed the posturing and rapid shifts in tone that make both of the Rays such engaging characters. Watching them negotiate the space around each other and their not-quite-shared knowledge of Fraser is engrossing.

Why I'm reccing this fic: So. Canonically, due South has a Chicago cop partnered up half-time with a Canadian Mountie who solves a peculiar assortment of Major (and not) Crime with his bat-ears, licks evidence, and brings a deaf half-wolf who can read lips with him to crime scenes.

The rest of Team Reality has done an excellent job of sleight-of-handing my brain away from this fact with angst, hard crime, and hot sex. This author turns on the spotlight. You don't believe me? Check out what Charlie, the poor forensic guy, has to say:
