1) Five Stages of Grief by [livejournal.com profile] aerye (K/V, ~800 words)
Heartbreaking and sweet. But mainly heartbreaking.

2) First by Ardent (F/K, ~2,000 words)
Touching. Various first times of Fraser and Kowalski.

3) High Speed Chase by Ardent (F/K, ~2,600 words)
Fraser likes speed. The details of this fic make me smile.

4) A Fistful Of Daisies by [livejournal.com profile] brigantine1 (F/K, PG, ~2,500 words)
Fluffy funny goodness.

5) Eight Ball Corner Pocket by [livejournal.com profile] brooklinegirl (K/V, R, ~2,100 words)
An angsty but touching scene that gets to me.

6) Where Is My Hat by Journey (F/K, ~1,200 words)
Emotionally courageous Fraser and I love that.

7) Chase by Journey (F/K, ~2,300 words)
Assertive Fraser with some manhandling. Ahem.

8) Justice by [livejournal.com profile] luzula (Fraser, PG, ~300 words)
An insta-rec because I can't forget about it today.

9) Explanatory Notes by Resonant/[livejournal.com profile] resonant8 (F/K, PG 13, ~800 words)
Clueless Fraser is fun.

10) What I Like About You by [livejournal.com profile] spuffyduds (F/V/K, R or NC 17, ~2,000 words)
It tells us what the three boys love about each other and it makes me happy.

Me again. Some recs well in time for the weekend. Next up is Gay Bar Recs.

Here are some of my favorites when it comes to angst. I am talking seriously dark, so please consider referring to the given warnings. Just fyi, I heard both podfics without warnings and I liked it that way.

1) 9:30 to Yellowknife by [livejournal.com profile] aerye (Vecchio/Kowalski, Kowalski/Fraser, R, ~5,200 words)
It moved me. A lot. Apart from that, I don't want to spoil. Summary of the author: Sometimes it's hard to know who you really love.

2) Executor by Kat Allison/[livejournal.com profile] katallison (Welsh, F/K, ~9,000 words)
Wonderful Welsh POV. He talks about the boys. The podfic can be found here: audiofic archive.

3) The End of the Road by Kat Allison/[livejournal.com profile] katallison (F/K, ~95,000 words)
Relationship fail of epic proportions. It's painful, realistic, and it makes far too much sense. I couldn't stop reading.

4) Photograph by Giulietta/[livejournal.com profile] mondschein1 (F/K, ~850 words)
It's a letter to RayK in Fraser's voice. I highly recommend the podfic: audiofic archive. She reads it herself and it's very intense (about 7 minutes long).

Note: Many other great angsty (or romantic) stories can be found in the Masterlist (Angst vs. Romance) of DS Match (2007). In case you want to know more about DS Match: Look here.

Hello, I'm your [livejournal.com profile] ds_recsredux  guest reccer for February!   *offers bannock and bark tea  to everyone*     While I'm a very enthusiastic F/K fangirl through and through, there are moments when I like to read  stories
about rare pairings.

What do I mean by rare pairings? Basically, couples who have had very few stories written about them. Throughout the month, I'll post about a specific due South character and his (or her) lesser-known partners.

Today's post is all about Fraser.

Oh, dear! )

Back when I got into this fandom, fic first, it was all Kowalski all the time. The trail of recs I followed led me through stories where Vecchio simply wasn't there, and some where one might wish he wasn't. Then one day, someone explained Ray Vecchio to me in a way that I could understand and love.

In Kowalski is Bleeding by [livejournal.com profile] cesperanza I discovered that Ray Vecchio was alive, vibrant, likeable. Loveable, even. Of course he loved the GTO - he appreciates classic cars. And he loved Fraser, would just drop everything to help him. Thanks, Speranza, for starting my education.

Then [livejournal.com profile] aeyre showed me that Vecchio was just right for my boy Kowalski in You Get What You Need, and I was suddenly a Ray/Ray convert. Boys bruised by Canada and Vegas, but not broken; able to somehow strangely fit together, to find love. Not the grand romance each of them chased during the show, but an "older and wiser" kind of love, no less intense for it's pragmatism.

I had to rethink my original premise that Vecchio was straight. If he could be in love with Kowalski, why not Fraser? "Well, hell!" I said to [livejournal.com profile] china_shop. "Maybe Vecchio is a drag queen every Saturday night." And she wrote me Gloria (the alias that you've been living under) to prove it.

And in the end where can I go but to wingfic? My gift from [livejournal.com profile] llassah was the beautiful, dreamlike Fledgling, where Ray gets wings and learns to use them. Ray Vecchio, you crawled into my heart and head in surprising ways, but I'm so glad I got to know you.

Title: The one with the elf
Author: Anna S ([livejournal.com profile] eliade)
Pairing: Gen
Rating: G
Length: 954 words
Why I'm reccing this fic: Here is Grade A Due South characterization. Fraser and Ray have a moment in the bullpen, just like any other moment they've shared at the station, except what comes out of Fraser's mouth is pure crack. And Ray explodes at it, just like at all of Fraser's other weirdnesses, and then they go on. I'm not sure which is funnier, Fraser and Ray's usual interactions or Fraser's bizarre confession.

A brief excerpt )

Title: I Was a Canadian Zombie
Author: [livejournal.com profile] aerye
Pairing: Fraser/Kowalski
Rating: R
Length: 1,760 words
Why I'm reccing this fic: Aerye's fic is a little outside the norm, not just because it's an AU--she also uses an OC narrator. And the prompt she wrote to? What happens when a small-town Canadian boy falls in love with a hot-blooded American who comes to town with a modern dance troupe? And things can only get worse as the town is attacked by ZOMBIES. Her Frank the Zombie is hilariously deadpan as he and his friends munch their way through Inuvik, while befriending the local Mountie and his gorgeous boytoy dancer. Proof that Fraser can be polite to anyone.

Title: Ray Likes It Red
Author: Isis ([livejournal.com profile] isiscolo)
Pairing: Fraser/Kowalski UST, sort of
Rating: G
Length: 1,500 words
Why I'm reccing this fic: The humor in this fic comes from Isis's masterful use of Ray as the unreliable narrator. Despite a tight Ray POV, the reader, knowing Turnbull's tactics and being aware of Fraser's adventures with the previous Ray, figures out what's going on at the Consulate while Ray comes to an amusingly incorrect conclusion.

It's a source of great angst to me that I find Kowalski's voice harder than almost any other character I've ever written; I think it's partially because CKR's delivery is so unique and so influenced by his physicality, and partially because Kowalski is so delightfully non-linear ("buttplate"?!) and I have a woefully linear brain. So I have deep, deep admiration for writers who can really capture his rhythm and his quirks of speech without making them sound forced—puts a smile on my face as big as Lake Michigan.

In Character, by [livejournal.com profile] joandarck (F/K, sorta kinda Fraser/Thatcher, rated R) – For my money, Joan has the best Kowalski voice going; when I first started writing Kowalski and was having some trouble getting a handle on him, I read this fic and almost immediately emailed Joan to help me find my way. She's so good at the rhythm, and the Kowalski-isms ("you're really goin' to run back and forth like a squirrel with no nut, here?"), and the jittery motion. And the Fraser voice is excellent besides. Add that to a sizzling hot roleplay scenario, and you've got a fantastic read.

An excerpt: )

Love, and a Series of Telephone Calls, by [livejournal.com profile] aerye (K/V, rated G) – I will confess that I beta-ed this fic, but really, the beta process primarily involved flailing of the "OMG I LOVE THIS" variety. It takes so many of the Ray/Ray conventions and flips them on their heads, and the result is just wall-to-wall glee that feels fresh and grounded in the characters as we know them, but not necessarily as we're used to seeing them in fic. The bulk of the story is in Vecchio POV, which is awesome, but the eponymous telephone calls are between Fraser and Kowalski, and the Kowalski voice there is gold. I really cannot tell you how much joy this fic has brought me.

An excerpt: )

Watching the Detectives, by [livejournal.com profile] brooklinegirl (F/V/K, rated R) – I also beta-ed this fic (hey, it was a busy winter), and after I first read it, I had lunch with [livejournal.com profile] sdwolfpup and found myself quoting about 3/4 of it to her, grinning the entire time. It's hilarious, for one thing—Vecchio saying "Again?", wearily, as he's informed that they're going through the front door—NEVER fails to make me laugh. And the Kowalski POV, especially the part about figuring out Fraser, is worth the price of admission. That the fic is HOT as well as hilarious doesn't hurt, either; nothing like three boys finally figuring out they're made for each other.

An excerpt: )

Man With a (Fucking Fantastic) Plan, by [livejournal.com profile] etben (F/V/K, rated NC-17) – This is one of my favorite FVK fics ever. Etben absolutely nails the balance between these guys, how well they fit together in pairs and then how insanely awesome they are as a trio, as well as anyone in the fandom. And her Kowalski voice is just a joy; easy and natural and never overdone.

An excerpt: )

Chicago Is So Two Years Ago, by [livejournal.com profile] minervacat (second part here) (K/V, rated NC-17) – This is another of my favorite dS stories; I've recced it a ton and I will very happily rec it again. A lovely, long, surefire comfort fic that just makes me insanely happy. This was also the fic that illustrated to me that one of Kowalski's quirks of speech is how he occasionally doesn't use contractions where an ordinary person would (which is kind of hilarious, considering that one thing Fraser-POV writers need to remember is that Fraser DOES use contractions). Of course that's just one small portion of how well the Kowalski voice works in this fic, but it's always stood out to me.

An excerpt: )

Failsafe, by [livejournal.com profile] sprat (F/K, rated PG-13) – This was one of my favorite stories from last year's DS Match. (Sprat was on Team Angst, so be warned, though it's not as angsty as some from that challenge.) The central conflict is so organic and understated, and it's one that I think would necessarily arise in any relationship with Fraser (funnily enough, I've written a fic with this same central conflict from an F/V perspective), and Sprat deals with it beautifully. The fic as a whole is wonderfully tense and intense, not a word wasted. From a character voice perspective, it's extremely impressive, too—sometimes fanon tends to de-dork Kowalski, and that always makes me sad because I LOVE Kowalski's dorkiness. But Sprat manages here to give us a Kowalski who's serious and capable, but who still has that dorktastic side, which is a perfect (and very canon-esque) subtle balance to the angst. Just an all-around brilliant fic.

An excerpt: )

And that's it for today… please feel free to link your own Kowalski-tastic recs in the comments!

Hmm. Apparently fetish stories go for the single-word titles. ;-)

Title: Sole
Author: Anagi
Pairing: Fraser/Kowalski
Rating: NC-17
Length: ~1,800 words
Why I'm reccing this fic: This is the first fic I think of when the word "fetish" is mentioned, a classic leather boot kink. The taste of the polish, the smell of Fraser inside--it all drives us Ray completely around the bend, and Fraser ends up taking full advantage. Guh!

A brief excerpt )

Sole

Title: Handcuffs
Author: Aerye ([livejournal.com profile] aerye)
Pairing: Fraser/Kowalski
Rating: NC-17
Length: 635 words
Why I'm reccing this fic: Short and hot like burning. This fic takes place in the single moment when Fraser puts the cuffs on Ray in Asylum, though there's an intriguing use of future tense in the story structure. Handcuffs as a fetish object have been done a million times, but rarely so viscerally and so well.

A brief excerpt )

Handcuffs

Title: Freaks
Author: Arrow ([livejournal.com profile] arrow00)
Pairing: Fraser/Kowalski
Rating: R
Length: 3,039 words
Why I'm reccing this fic: The previous two (and many) fetish stories are mainly PWPs. (And I do love a good PWP!) This story is different in that it's more of a character study. The "perfect" Mountie knows himself to be a freak, more so than anyone realizes. But Ray's acceptance of his own freakishness, and unmistakable appreciation of Fraser's, gives Fraser the kind of freedom and belonging he's never known. Not to say that there isn't some scorching Ray-loves-the-crossdressing sex, because there's that here, too.

So today I am going to flail about my favorite established relationship fics.

... wait, please don't run away! I know that they are not everyone's cuppa (especially if they are not sold 100% on a pairing) but for me they are actually some of the most interesting stories for examining my favorite relationships. I am sold enough on Fraser/Kowalski/Vecchio that I really believe that just about any scenario could be worked to at least get them into bed together, if not planning a long term committed relationship. But why would they stay together? What would keep them working to keep a relationship that is so unconventional and how could they ever balance it with work? These are some wonderfully compelling questions and I think that these next few stories that I am reccing today do a wonderful job at getting at the answers to them.

Here be Fic Recs )

As always, please feel free to poke holes in my categories and squee about your favorite established relationship fics in the comments. I am here to squee along! :o)

Okay, since (like everyone else) there was no way I could choose a mere *three* "fics of my heart," because you should SEE my bookmarks and plus that's just cruel and unusual - I decided to define fics of my heart as those which bring me comfort, which make me smile and feel sooooo happy no matter what. They are classics and I'm sure you've all read them already but you know you want to again, because they are just. that. good. :)

Title: Morning Glory
Author: [livejournal.com profile] aerye
Pairing: F/K
Rating: R?
Length: medium
Why I'm reccing this fic: I guess I have a sleepy!kink, where warm bodies tangle together under toasty covers and wake in that marvelous, lazily-stretching way. And while Fraser might be the morningest of all morning people, Ray isn't, and I like that in my Ray. Aerye gives a week's worth of mornings and hotness and Ray and Fraser being who they are, in addition to being Ray-and-Fraser. ♥

Title: Ray Is Not Actually Graphing The History Of His Relationship With Fraser--That Would Be Pathetic, And Ray Is Not Pathetic--But If He Was Graphing It, Even Just In His Own Stressed-Out, Messed-Up Brain, It Might Look Something Like This
Author: [livejournal.com profile] sprat
Pairing: F/K
Rating: explicit
Length: medium-long
Why I'm reccing this fic: Oh, [livejournal.com profile] sprat. How are you so brilliant? This fic has everything - humor and angst and stealth relationship conversations, and misguided!Fraser and fantastically befuddled!Ray and graphs. Actual, mathematically realistic (which I appreciate, being a teacher and all) graphs that will crack. you. up. Oh, and the hotness is *scorching* - should've been a graph for THAT, though I'm not sure it can be mathematically rendered.

Title: Housekeeping
Author: [livejournal.com profile] resonant8
Pairing: F/K
Rating: NC-17
Length: medium/35K
Why I'm reccing this fic: I looooove this story - even though Ray and Fraser are apart post-COTW at the beginning - because wacky things happen and Ray gets to be the undisputed Hero and rescue Fraser (more than once!) and there is banter, and banter-with-Dief, and Welsh's dry wit and a charming cameo by Frannie. With a clever alternating POV and marvelous Fraser/Ray voices, and a happy ending... what more could you ask for in a story?

Title: Handcuffs
Author: [livejournal.com profile] aerye
Pairing: Fraser/RayK
Rating: hard R
Length: 635 words
Why I'm reccing this fic: This is a fairly short ficlet set during and after Asylum, focusing on, well, see title. An extraordinarily hot story of intense horniness, and not just because it hits me right in the kink. *koff* The events of Asylum are skillfully covered in a very few brief future-tense phrases that contribute to the atmosphere that gets Fraser and Ray into bed.

A brief excerpt )

Title: Wager
Author: [livejournal.com profile] brooklinegirl
Pairing: Fraser/RayK
Rating: NC-17
Length: 2,547 words
Why I'm reccing this fic: Here is the rest of the story of the poker game at the end of Odds. It starts with some lovely Ray and Fraser characterization -- Ray enjoying their connection, their deeper knowledge of each other -- when his understanding of that connection starts to shift and slide into another kind of connection, and then it's "must find a place to get naked now."

A brief excerpt )

Wager

Title: Fucking Girls
Author: [livejournal.com profile] pearl_o
Pairing: Fraser/RayK
Rating: R
Length: 1,522 words
Why I'm reccing this fic: Here is a different take on Odds, with Ray worried about Fraser in the aftermath of his encounter with Lady Shoes. In a delightful example of the unreliable narrator, Ray is convinced that Fraser is sexless and naive, and that it's up to Ray to clue him in. Meanwhile, it means nothing that Ray's imagination is painting him vivid portraits of Fraser in bed with women. Will Ray learn where his stubbornly blinkered POV has gone wrong?

Author: [livejournal.com profile] aerye
Pairing: Ray and Ray preslash
Rating: PG13
Length: shortish-middling
Why I'm reccing this fic: because the structure is brilliant, the tension is unbelievable, the story is heart-wrenching, and the preslashy subtext is awesome. i don't usually go for the hurt/comfort thing, and this is just enough not h/c. and of course i love these boys and how much they need each other and how they balance on the edge of realizing it.

Title: Quick Reverse Turn And A Triple Jive
Author: [livejournal.com profile] aerye
Pairing: F/K/V
Rating: NC17
Length: shortish-medium
Why I'm reccing this fic: god. when i first read this, i couldn't quite process it really, and thought "i'll reread this a few times and give proper feedback later." i reread it. and reread it and reread it ad nauseum, and still can't quite do the feedback thing. it's kind of a heavy mother for the length. basically, Kowalski discovers he's not the gravitational center around which Vecchio and Fraser orbit in their odd little relationship. and it turns out Kowalski's good enough and brave enough to absorb this new information and keep going. and [livejournal.com profile] aerye's good enough to explain how and why and when and have this weird tangly three-way WORK and MAKE SENSE and i love her so much for it.

plus it's hot. :D

Title: it takes three to tango
Author: [livejournal.com profile] lordessrenegade
Pairing: F/K/V
Rating: NC17
Length: shortish-medium
Why I'm reccing this fic: because it's HOT. this one's just porn, dude. dancing. in a club. Fraser drinking beer. Kowalski being his slinky, sexy self. Vecchio getting all possessive. so freaking hot, ok? damn.

Title: Drive You All Night
Author: [livejournal.com profile] justbreathe80 and [livejournal.com profile] brooklinegirl
Pairing: Ray/Ray
Rating: NC17
Length: long
Why I'm reccing this fic: because i'm completely easy when it comes to these two? yes, Ray and Ray, but i meant the authors as well. again, this is just PORN, and thank god, because it's some of the best i've ever read. in this pairing, in this fandom, in fandom period. it's just monitor-scorching, i'll-be-in-my-bunk quality porn, and then the end makes my sentimental little heart go squeeze.

A brief excerpt )

Man, this was tough. It's hard to look back over a YEAR of fic and pick out my absolute favorites. But these three are the ones that stuck with me, that I went back and read and re-read and re-read. There are SO MANY others that I loved but these are the ones I keep coming back to.

Title: untitled threesome snippet
Author: [livejournal.com profile] aerye
Pairing: F/K/V
Rating: G
Length: tiny
Why I'm reccing this fic: This was honestly, I think, the first ficlet that made me see the potential in F/K/V. This sold me on it. It's sweet without being sappy, all of them are completely in character, and just - seeing the hugely varied dynamics throughout just captured my attention and make me fall completely for the threesome.

Title: Improper Procedure
Author: [livejournal.com profile] tx_tart
Pairing: Fraser/Kowalski
Rating: NC-17
Length: medium
Why I'm reccing this fic: Because it is so fucking, fucking hot. Because Ray has a kink that I, myself, share, and because [livejournal.com profile] tx_tart writes it so fucking beautifully. Because I've read this more times than can possibly be healthy for me, and because it turns me on every, every time.

Title: Tacit
Author: [livejournal.com profile] malnpudl
Pairing: Fraser/Kowalski
Rating: NC-17
Length: medium
Why I'm reccing this fic: In Due South, tent fic is old hat. Ray and Fraser, on the adventure, out on the frozen tundra, sexual tension in a tiny tent - that's been done over and over, right? This fic is just a breath of fresh air into an old standby plot line, and it's them and hot and sexy and tense and wonderful.

Title: Waking Up Wrong
Author: [livejournal.com profile] ultra_chrome
Pairing: Ray/Ray

Title: Life Goes On, Life Or Something Like It, Life And Love
Author: [livejournal.com profile] jenboo
Pairing: Ray/Ray
Rating: NC-17
Length: Medium, long, short respectively
Why I'm reccing this fic: Because it takes a long, in-depth look at the way their relationship develops and the way they face the struggles that come with being a couple. And this is rare when looking at the Ray/Ray relationship. And it's not too heavy on the angst.

Title: Five stages Of Grief
Author: [livejournal.com profile] aerye
Pairing: Ray/Ray

Why I'm reccing this fic: Because her Ray K voice is spot on. And because this fic breaks up Fraser/Kowalski and makes me believe it.

I LOVE this challenge. I clapped my hands together and made incoherent squeaky sounds of joy, and then damn near broke my brain trying to narrow my picks down to three.

Title: You Get What You Need
Author: [livejournal.com profile] aerye
Pairing: Ray/Ray
Rating: In the R/NC-17 range.
Length: 4000 words, more or less.
Why I'm reccing this fic: Because I love it more than words can express? Because [livejournal.com profile] aerye writes Ray/Ray perfectly? This story has absolutely everything, expertly layering the mundane routine of life that is such an important part of Ray/Ray with flirting, snarking, and supercharged emotions running under everything. Great Kowalski perspective with pissiness and sexiness and mercurial mood changes. It's a raw, hurty Kowalski who could just be spinning out of control into the bad place, except he's got Vecchio holding him together. And Vecchio! The bitching, the fond insults, the clothes, the love, the strength, and the stubborn, scared need. There's something both fierce and vulnerable about him that is just wonderful. And Fraser! I can't begin to describe the Fraser. Also check out the rest of her Ray/Ray, including the "prequel sort of thing" Speaking in Tongues.

Title: Close to the Chest
Author: Hth ([livejournal.com profile] hth_the_first)
Pairing: Ray/Ray
Rating: Not porny. What are those not-porn ratings, anyway?
Length: 2700 words, more or less.
Why I'm reccing this fic: I just love the whole idea of this fic. It's Ray/Ray established relationship, Kowalski's 40th birthday party. It's Kowalski POV and full of wonderful kind-of-drunk!Ray mental tangents. Kowalski falls asleep with his head in Vecchio's lap and overhears Vecchio and Fraser talking. It's lay-the-cards-on-the-table time for guys who Just Can't Talk About Their Feelings. It's got that lovely, sharp thread of angst, but is also rich with humor and love and affection and tolerant, exasperated understanding.

A brief excerpt )

Title: Refugees
Author: [livejournal.com profile] china_shop
Pairing: Ray/Ray
Rating: R
Length: 70K (12,300ish words. Yes, I really like word counts.)
Why I'm reccing this fic: It's Vecchio POV, and, despite my love for the recs above, I'm mad about Vecchio perspective on Kowalski. It's a stimulating read, as it hides some things from the reader, letting us wait for explanations while we try to piece together past and present events. It's Kowalski newly returned to Chicago, and he's at rock-bottom. Vecchio sweeps in with flair and a curled lip and some issues of his own. It's got a handy device to let them cohabitate without being friends or lovers, leading to these fabulous strange interactions as they circle around each other in Kowalski's crappy apartment. Plus, it has an awesome Frannie secondary storyline.

Title: Hawks and Hands
Author: Dira Sudis ([livejournal.com profile] dsudis)
Pairing: RayK/Fraser
Rating: NC-17
Length: superlong
Why I'm reccing this fic: Because it's amazing. It's gotta be the best fic I've ever read. Dira knows her stuff and what she doesn't know, she researches like you wouldn't believe (seriously, she's actually a little crazy that way). I love the way she weaves canon into a completely AU fic. The result is a believable and familiar, yet totally new, read.

Brief excerpt? HA! Just go read it.

Title: Shades of Ray
Author: Miriam Heddy
Pairing: RayK/Fraser
Rating: R? NC-17? Something like that.
Length: long
Why I'm reccing this fic: Because I really, really love Ray going through the whole immigration process on his own. It's a good Ray voice and I love how he's independent, not relying on Fraser. I think he'd have to prove to himself that he can find a job and become a citizen on his own.

A brief excerpt )

Title: You Get What You Need
Author: [livejournal.com profile] aerye
Pairing: Ray/Ray
Rating: PG-13, I think.

Title: Breathless
Author: [personal profile] aerye
Pairing Fraser/Kowalski
Rating: Not rated, but it has some pretty hot kissing, so take that as you will.
Length vignette
Why I'm reccing this fic: [personal profile] aerye was one of the first authors I read in this fandom, and the fact that I still love her stories many many months (years?) later just goes to show how good they are. She gets Fraser perfectly here, showing us how he may be buttoned-up and polite but he's also physical and needy and raw, and while he may hide his feelings for Ray most of the time, man, is he intense. It's hot and gorgeous, and oh, the last line—just wonderful.
