Today I'll rec a couple of longer podfics which have been posted during this year.

Title: Some Strange Prophecy
Reader: [livejournal.com profile] ann_ciudad
Author: [livejournal.com profile] cesperanza
Pairing: Fraser/Kowalski
Rating: NC-17
Length: 5 h 4 min 46 s
Why I'm reccing this podfic: The story is a fandom classic, so I won't talk much about it (short version: it is awesome). But the reading! I have to say, this is on my list of top five podfics ever (or would be if I were to make such a list). At first listen, it's a low-key reading and not expressive in a flashy way, but it pulls you right into the story, and the emotion is there under the surface and grips you when you least expect it. It's also a great take on Ray Kowalski POV, and the dialogue is especially good, too. I suppose my one complaint is that the volume is a little low.

Title: Birds of a Feather
Reader: [livejournal.com profile] mific
Author: [livejournal.com profile] julia_here
Pairing: Benton Fraser and Rodney McKay gen (it's a crossover between due South and SGA)
Rating: PG
Length: 1 h 25 min 5 s
Why I'm reccing this podfic: This story has lots of Fraser family backstory, and I love it to bits (I don't know anything about SGA, but I didn't really need to in order to appreciate the story). I really like [livejournal.com profile] mific's reading--I don't know where her accent is from, but I love it. There are also bits of bird calls used to separate the sections of the story, which is quite atmospheric and works well with the structure of the story.

Today I give you more recs for short podfics (or podficlets, as I like to call them):

Title: Waste
Reader: [livejournal.com profile] vsee
Author: [livejournal.com profile] spuffyduds
Pairing: Fraser/Kowalski
Rating: R
Length: 2:30 minutes
Why I'm reccing this podfic: This is a yummy little snippet about Fraser indulging in a fantasy in the shower. [livejournal.com profile] vsee's voice has a kind of intimate quality that I like a lot.

Waste (link goes to the podfic archive)

Title: Transition
Reader: [livejournal.com profile] podfic_lover
Author: [livejournal.com profile] resonant8
Pairing: R
Rating: Fraser/Kowalski
Length: 2:29 minutes
Why I'm reccing this podfic: More of Fraser's fantasy life! (That could definitely be the theme of a rec post, I'm thinking.) It's a bedroom conversation, and [livejournal.com profile] podfic_lover reads it appropriately, with a sort of hushed voice. I like the dialogue especially.

Transition (link goes to the podfic archive)

Title: "Four snippets up" and "Four snippets down" (see the podfic archive entries for links to all snippets)
Author and reader: [livejournal.com profile] keerawa
Pairing: Six gen snippets, two with Fraser/Kowalski UST
Rating: ranging from G to PG-13
Length: 9:00 minutes each
Why I'm reccing this podfic: Eight snippets for the price of one rec! Recording sets of snippets grouped by theme is a cool idea, and one I wish others would try out, too. The "up" snippets are cheerful, and the "down" snippets are angsty. Keerawa reads both sets equally effectively--I can confirm this, because when listening to them yesterday, I was laughing out loud at one set, and getting tears in my eyes at the other.

luzula: a Luzula pilosa, or hairy wood-rush (Default)

I'm the guest reccer for November, and I'll be reccing podfics (which I did last year too, but hey, I like podfics).

First off, I'll rec a couple of short ones. Short podfics often get overlooked, maybe because of the process of downloading a podfic and then putting it on your mp3-player takes a little bit of effort. By contrast, a short fic is right there on the screen. But a short podfic may be the perfect thing to listen to while you clear the table after dinner, for example.

When I went looking for short podfics, it actually turned out that there were so many that I wanted to rec that this will be the first post of two. (Just as a tip, you can browse the browse the Audiofic Archive by combining multiple categories, for example "due South" and "under 10 minutes".)

Title: Please Advise
Reader: [livejournal.com profile] andeincascade
Author:[livejournal.com profile] spuffyduds
Pairing: Fraser/Kowalski
Rating: PG
Length: 2:11
Why I'm reccing this podfic: This is Ande's first podfic, and I was right there in the room when she recorded it (at Bitching Party). I love Ande's reading and wish she would record more, because she's a natural at it--the pacing is great, and her voice is so expressive. And the snippet is a delightful conversation between Fraser and his father.

Title: Purgatory
Author and reader: [livejournal.com profile] slidellra
Pairing: Fraser/Victoria
Rating: G
Length: 2:48
Why I'm reccing this podfic: This fic is short, chilling, and opens a whole world of possibility. It's one of those snippets that stay with you, and [livejournal.com profile] slidellra's clear and expressive reading makes it even more so.

Download link at the podfic archive

Title: Once Upon a Time
Author and reader: [livejournal.com profile] malnpudl
Pairing: Fraser/Kowalski
Rating: R
Length: 2:20
Why I'm reccing this podfic: This snippet is full of delicious, tasty UST, and it also has Fraser telling a fairy tale about the Kinsey report. Since it's a fic about storytelling, it feels very appropriate to record as a podfic, and as always, I love Mal's reading.

Hey, could there be a tag of some sort for podfic?
[identity profile] innocentsmith.livejournal.com
Hi, I'm [livejournal.com profile] innocentsmith, and I'll be guest reccing stories for the month of October.

Due South has a lot of things going for it, but one of the things that makes the show so appealing for fandom purposes (I mean, aside from all the slashbait) is how character-driven it is. The leads are fascinating and multilayered, the secondary characters are full of interesting contradictions that make for great fic fodder. And even the most minor characters show flashes of depth and humanity.

So this month I'll be reccing character pieces, with a mixture of gen, canon pairings, femslash, and slash. Let's start off with a selection of fics that take place Long Ago, and, in some cases, Far Away. Who are these characters, where did they come from, and how did they get to be the people they are?

Bullet Challenge by [livejournal.com profile] sageness (Gen, G) - A short epistolary piece that somehow manages to be the best bit of Bob Fraser fic I think I've ever read. Here he is in all his chatty stoicism, understated heroism, and completely facepalm-y priorities.

Home Schooling (Gen, G) - A brief window into Benton's childhood through the eyes of Martha Fraser. I have a major weakness for Martha-fic, having been close to an irascible, larger-than-life grandparent myself, and [livejournal.com profile] luzula always does great things with an underrepresented character.

white gloves and wet umbrellas by Pares (Gen, G) - Stella waits to be picked up after dance class on a rainy afternoon, and has a brief interaction with a boy named Ray. No, another boy named Ray.

Scars by [livejournal.com profile] estrella30 (Kowalski/Stella, PG) - Little Ray K and Stella, with the best of intentions, leaving marks on each other. Sweet, and yet suggestive of what's to come for these two: I never read this one without wibbling a bit.

Deserted by [livejournal.com profile] nos4a2no9 (Gen, PG-13) - Young Fraser finds a postcard from a faraway place. A lovely, bittersweet little piece, suffused with longing.

I meant to use a broader theme for this set? And then it turned into a Frannie lovefest, and I decided just to embrace it.

Frannie/various (includes Frannie/OFC, Frannie/OMC, Frannie/Elaine, Frannie/Turnbull, and Frannie/Fraser/Kowalski) Fun and Games by madsciencechick/somewhatdeluded. Arguably my all-time favorite Frannie story. Frannie doesn't stop until she finds -- until she makes -- her happy ending.

Excerpt )

Frannie/OFC, Frannie/Stella, Frannie/Elaine, Frannie/Thatcher, Frannie/Maggie Chick Habit by [livejournal.com profile] ignazwisdom The author's summary says it better than I can -- Francesca Vecchio learns to want, learns that she can’t have what she wants, and finally learns that she can.

Excerpt )

Frannie/Ray Kowalski, Frannie/Elaine, Frannie/Turnbull It Never Rains But It Pours by [livejournal.com profile] brooklinegirl. A series of joyful encounters.

Excerpt )

Frannie/Elaine Fangirl!Frannie by [livejournal.com profile] innocentsmith. Frannie discovers and embraces media fandom. (One of us!)

Excerpt )

Frannie/Elaine 'cause we belong together now by [livejournal.com profile] wintercreek A lovely established relationship piece.

Excerpt )

Frannie/Maggie, with background Fraser/Kowalski/Vecchio hundreds of miles north of anywhere by [livejournal.com profile] lordessrenegade Frannie goes to visit her brother and his family for the holidays. A sweet story with terrific dialogue -- and never quite as melancholy as my memory tries to make it.

Excerpt )

Frannie/Kowalski, background Fraser/Vecchio Getting this happy takes practice by [livejournal.com profile] belmanoir. Ray goes undercover as Frannie's boyfriend. It's not exactly a deep cover. A guaranteed smile.

Excerpt )

Frannie/Fraser, Frannie/Kowalski What You Make of It by [livejournal.com profile] dessert_first. Frannie/Fraser is tricky to find in my usual online haunts, and when I do encounter it, it's difficult to overcome my own resistance to the pairing. This one manages it as an AU -- a fusion with 'While You Were Sleeping.' Funny and warm.

Excerpt )

Happy July, everyone! I'm going to be guest reccer this month -- and I'm focusing on rarepairs. In this episode, one-shot characters need love, too! Or at least some hot sex.

Eric Kitikmeot/Fraser Around, Around by [livejournal.com profile] arrow00. Eric is a fascinating character, and Fraser becomes interestingly flexible around him. A lovely episode tag for The Mask from Eric's POV.

Excerpt )

Kowalski/Volpe Stop Me If You've Heard This One by [livejournal.com profile] shayheyred. Basically, I love the voice on this one -- it has the ramble and flow of a certain someone telling a story aloud.

Excerpt )

Kowalski/Volpe and Fraser/Kowalski Asylum Redux (who's gonna ride your wild horses) by [livejournal.com profile] china_shop Volpe was dead: to begin with. But then, this is the world of due South -- that's really not as much of an obstacle as one might expect.

Excerpt )

Mark Smithbauer/Vecchio Hockey as an Offensive Weapon by [livejournal.com profile] izzybeth. Smithbauer gets name-checked in quite a few stories about Fraser's sexual history. But as far as I know, this is the only story that adds him to Ray Vecchio's. Even though Vecchio finds him intensely irritating.

Excerpt )

Suzanne Chapin/Vecchio Love and Glory by [livejournal.com profile] brooklinegirl I love Vecchio's immediate, head-over-heels reaction to Chapin in the episode and his romantic framing of their entire, brief interaction. This fic recaptures the whirlwind romantic spirit of the original episode -- but it's set just as Ray is preparing to go to Vegas, so the overall feeling is bittersweet.

Excerpt )

Vecchio/Frankie Zuko Like A Halfway House For The Mobster-To-Cop Transition by [livejournal.com profile] mizface Ray had to be changed by his time in Vegas. Zuko notices.

Excerpt )

Ok, that's my short and clearly incomplete list. A mention of Fraser/Smithbauer without links? No stories about Ian Macdonald or MacKenzie King? No Maggie fic? (In my defense, my bookmarking habits are atrocious.) So, help me fill it out -- what are some of your favorite stories featuring one-shot characters?

Tune in next week for office romance -- coworkers, support staff, and superiors.

I can't resist to name a few more stories, a random selection this time. It was fun!

More fics that stayed with me. I'll use a broad definition of kink.

1) Steam by [livejournal.com profile] arrow00 (F/K, NC 17, ~5,900 words)
Some perps leave the boys tied up. I find it ridiculously hot. I also need to mention her story Freaks. It has my favorite crossdressed Fraser, the one without the wig.

AU with Fraser as a prostitute. It's hot and it amuses me.

3) A State of Mind That No One Knows by [livejournal.com profile] brooklinegirl (F/K, NC 17, ~3,500 words)
Convincing transition into new areas of sex. RayK finds out that Fraser likes to be held down. Podfic here: audiofic archive

5) Drawn by [livejournal.com profile] lalejandra, with [livejournal.com profile] serialkarma (F/K, PG 13, ~2,700 words)
Hand porn which is enough by itself. It's also witty and I adore it

6) Refraction by [livejournal.com profile] shrift (F/K, PG 13, ~4,000 words)
Fraser had been away for a while. He comes to the bullpen to find RayK in an unusual outfit. Made of win. Eyeliner!

7) What Else Would You Have Me Be? by [livejournal.com profile] sionnain (Mike Sweeney/Ray Kowalski, crossover Durham County/Due South, Mature, ~10,700 words)
Recommending this story as kinky doesn't do it justice - it's much more. But the pairing gets to me in a kinky way. This story introduces the universe and you can visit [livejournal.com profile] used_to_love_me to read more.

8) Cuffs by [livejournal.com profile] sprat (F/K, explicit, ~2,000 words)
A great weird experiment with handcuffs.
[identity profile] mamaffy.livejournal.com
It's a genre that I love. Be it Undercover in a Gay Bar or pure Gay Bar. Next up: Kinky.

1) Tilt by [livejournal.com profile] elementalv (F/K, R, ~3,100 words)
Kowalski originally visits the gay bar for burgers. Until he tilts.

Crossdressing undercover. Hot and fun.

3) Suited by [livejournal.com profile] joandarck (F/K, G, ~1,150 words)
It's Pre-Gay Bar in Welsh's Office with Welsh pov. Priceless. Also kind of hot.

4) Deep Cover by [livejournal.com profile] kijikun (F/K, ~3,000 words)
This fic has them pose as a couple and that satisfied my shallow needs. Some case!fic, too. It's witty and it gets emotionally complicated (angst). It left me wanting more.

5) Swimming With Sharks by [livejournal.com profile] nos4a2no9 (F/K, NC 17, ~38,000 words)
This story has everything. Sexual tension, angst, humor, hotness. It starts with Kowalski, undercover with Huey and Dewey. He's not in the best mood and he's in for a surprise.

6) Number Eight by Speranza[livejournal.com profile] cesperanza (F/K, ~5,000 words)
Wonderful story. Funny and suspenseful with a good case. It has great details and it's a trip to read.

Extra: Boardwalk by Kellie Matthews/[livejournal.com profile] kelliem (F/K, NC 17, ~14,500 words)
Not gay bar but undercover as rentboy and pimp. Funny, interesting, and hot casefic.
[identity profile] mamaffy.livejournal.com

2) Hawks and Hands (aka the Hockey AU) (Dira Sudis) read by [livejournal.com profile] fanfic_read_by/Issaro (F/K, NC 17, >26h)
Incredible length. Amazing hockey universe with great cameos of other DS cast members. I enjoyed her voice and style for hours.

5) American Way (Resonant/[livejournal.com profile] resonant8) read by [livejournal.com profile] luzula (F/K, NC 17, ~2h20min)
Fraser posing as an American and it's a lot of fun.

Wonderful, emotional reading about Kowalski's undercover life.
7) Practicalities written and read by [livejournal.com profile] slidellra (F/K, R, ~11min)
Rayk engages in risky sexual activities and Fraser's worried. I love her voice.
8) First One Thing, Then The Otter ([livejournal.com profile] alex51324) read by [livejournal.com profile] suzumenoko (F/K, ~1h 30min)
It's such a creative story. I think pace and voice are perfect.
9) Waste ([livejournal.com profile] spuffyduds) read by [livejournal.com profile] vsee (F/K implied, ~3min)
Kinky snippet that gets me every time. Fraser fantasizes.
10) Soft Arithmetic ([livejournal.com profile] china_shop) read by [livejournal.com profile] zabira (F/V/K, NC 17, ~40min)
Nice take on the post-series future and threesome porn.

Note: I won't bore you with individual Speranza recommendations but you'll find a lot of awesome podfics of her stories here (Hanged Man, Passion, Some Strange Prophecy, Wildly Dangerous Ways, With Six You Get Eggroll, and many more).

I just finished that up and one of the downloads might be urgent, so here you go.
I've spent some time tracking down DS videos, so I decided to recommend all the vids that I kept. Sometimes you have to scroll down, and one vid requires you to contact the vidder per email, I made that clear.
Naturally, I think they are all great. In case you want a smaller selection, I marked those with a star that, IMO, are often recommended.

[identity profile] mamaffy.livejournal.com
Me again. Some recs well in time for the weekend. Next up is Gay Bar Recs.

Here are some of my favorites when it comes to angst. I am talking seriously dark, so please consider referring to the given warnings. Just fyi, I heard both podfics without warnings and I liked it that way.

1) 9:30 to Yellowknife by [livejournal.com profile] aerye (Vecchio/Kowalski, Kowalski/Fraser, R, ~5,200 words)
It moved me. A lot. Apart from that, I don't want to spoil. Summary of the author: Sometimes it's hard to know who you really love.

2) Executor by Kat Allison/[livejournal.com profile] katallison (Welsh, F/K, ~9,000 words)
Wonderful Welsh POV. He talks about the boys. The podfic can be found here: audiofic archive.

3) The End of the Road by Kat Allison/[livejournal.com profile] katallison (F/K, ~95,000 words)
Relationship fail of epic proportions. It's painful, realistic, and it makes far too much sense. I couldn't stop reading.

4) Photograph by Giulietta/[livejournal.com profile] mondschein1 (F/K, ~850 words)
It's a letter to RayK in Fraser's voice. I highly recommend the podfic: audiofic archive. She reads it herself and it's very intense (about 7 minutes long).

Note: Many other great angsty (or romantic) stories can be found in the Masterlist (Angst vs. Romance) of DS Match (2007). In case you want to know more about DS Match: Look here.
[identity profile] mamaffy.livejournal.com
A small selection of stories that made me laugh. Next up: Angst.

1) Keeping Kowalski by [livejournal.com profile] brigantine1 (Ray/Ray, PG-13, ~11,000)
I love this Vecchio. Wonderful boy banter and vivid descriptions of details.

2) Straightness by [livejournal.com profile] j_s_cavalcante (F/K, NC 17, ~12,500)
RayK rationalizes that his totally straight self is doing not-so-straight stuff with Fraser. Very hot and fun, with adorable Kowalski.
ETA: Note that this story really isn't pure fun but elicits other strong emotions.

3) Juggling Act by Speranza/[livejournal.com profile] cesperanza (F/K, ~26,000 words)
Undercover!fic. Happy-making! The encounter with the kids in the park still always makes me laugh when I think of it.

4) Ray Is Not Actually Graphing The History Of His Relationship With Fraser... by [livejournal.com profile] sprat (F/K, explicit, ~6,200 words)
I never get tired of recommending it. Ahem. It's so much fun. And it has graphs!

5) Proving It! by [livejournal.com profile] ultra_chrome (F/K, NC 17, ~6.700 words)
RayK gets a promise and he can't wait. Hilarious! Some lines to die for. Suspenseful, too.
[identity profile] mamaffy.livejournal.com
Last time the fluff, this time the sadness. But in somewhat low doses. My choices are a bit random, it is a broad category.

These fics have something bittersweet about them. They aren't terrifying, they can be light and hopeful, but beware: They might punch you in the gut.

1) From Afar by TrueEnough (F/K, "R with NC-17 aspirations", ~21,700 words)
This is the angstiest of this batch. It has a beautiful and witty Fraser POV, a fascinating look in the head of a weird man. He can turn light-hearted events into misery. It's PCotW, after the quest, Fraser worries about Kowlaski leaving. It's unbetaed but, for me, well worth reading anyway.

2) A Year (More or Less) in the Life by [livejournal.com profile] pir8fancier (Ray/Ray, NC 17, ~25.000 words)
The second-angstiest for me and it fits in many categories. It's a hallmark story for Ray/Ray. IMHO a great fic to hook Ray/Ray-newbies. *winkwink* It's a whole lot of fun and very exciting from the start. It also has some not-so-subtle angst, but the boys handle it with their usual snark. Some intense lines.

3) The Elevator Diaries by [livejournal.com profile] china_shop (F/K, PG, ~3000 words)
It's light, whacky, and fun, which is adorable. Some sad undertones make it even better. The elevator rides of the boys reveal a lot.

4) Using Ray by Kalena/[livejournal.com profile] imkalena (F/K, not rated but written for "porn challenge", ~1000 words)
A short piece of emotionally intense porn.

5) The More Things Change by [livejournal.com profile] zelempa (RayK/Stella, PG-13, ~4700 words)
This is an insta-rec. It's more sweet than bitter, but the bits of bitterness are perfect. Ray's gay, but then there's Stella. Insightful and sensual piece with wonderful voices.

Hi, I'm guest reccing for June.

I plan to be a little more active in the first two weeks and leave us all some space when the Big Bang goes live.

I'll be sharing some of the fics that made it into my re-read folder. Many classic recs, but I'll try to slip in less-known ones as well. I hope you'll enjoy some.

A couple of month ago, I started with reading F/K and, lately, I love myself some Ray/Ray. I read all pairings but mostly those. My preference is longer, plot-y fic, either sweet and terribly romantic, or shatteringly angsty. I like humor, banter, darker views on characters, backstories, and fics that suck me in from the start.

I'll try to come up with topics for my recs. I'll start with something sweet. Sappy!Me is a sucker for Dating Fic:

Getting You Home by [livejournal.com profile] akite (Ray/Ray, ~1,300 words)
Great Vecchio voice, suited-up boys, and wonderful banter. So much fun and hot.

Dining Out by Kalena/[livejournal.com profile] imkalena (F/K, ~15,000 words)
Kowalski shows Fraser how courtship is done, and Fraser hates it. But is it really just a joke? Very sweet and hot. With adorable Turnbull on top.

Easy by Berty (F/K, ~4,500 words)
Dinner in the consulate and the mood is strange. Fantastic sexual tension. Podfic here: audiofic archive.

A Dare's A Dare by Speranza/[livejournal.com profile] cesperanza (F/K, ~10,000 words)
RayK takes out Miss Fraser and it's a hoot. I love how pissy Fraser is, and how the mood gradually develops.

All right, I think I have to hurry here...

Do you remember my 'Space-Mountie' rec from last time? Here comes another one. Well, not quite like 'Real Boys' but as fabulous.

Ray From The Material World by [livejournal.com profile] dessert_first - awesome work, I tell'ya!
I can undoubtedly say the same for Find Me A Find by [livejournal.com profile] green_grrl ... I mean, RayV opens up a Match-Maker business - do you need to know anything more?
Now we have outta space, match-makers what about the Wild West, huh?
Sheriff Ray and Outlaw Fraser?

A classic x-over is [livejournal.com profile] kelliem's Northern Comfort with 'Hard Core Logo', something you shouldn't miss out on. Neither this one: [livejournal.com profile] lucyhale's x-over with 'Wilby Wonderful' Right Then.

My AU rec for today is rather known as 'the space Mountie story' and if you really haven't heard of it yet... Well, it's a MUST read!!!

Real Boys by [livejournal.com profile] troyswann
There also is the sequel Real Worlds which finishes this story beautifully.

Wesley One Night by [livejournal.com profile] lynnmonster a crossover with 'Angel'.

All right, it's me again.

Today I want to rec a story probably everybody knows. At least us 'old' folks - I mean that in nicest of ways, of course, ::grins::.

Family Portrait by Journey
RayK with two small children in need of someone who is going to raise his kids with him, and Fraser desperately in need of someONE who is going to take care of him and he can take of. One of the most fabulous AUs ever written!

My crossover rec for today is Begone by [livejournal.com profile] villainny - there really should be more stories involving Crowley and Aziraphale. You don't know what or who I'm talking about? 'Good Omens' - those two angels are deadly!

Hi, I’m [livejournal.com profile] sam80853 and I’m you guest-reccer for May.

I will hopefully rec you some stories you immediately have to re-read or even hear about for the very first time.

I am a sucker for AU’s and crossovers. Yeah, I know not everybody’s cup of tea but getting some other fandoms into our sandbox is F U N, believe you me. And in my book it’s always a pleasure to grab the boys and put them where they haven’t been before ...

Enough talking. already!
