Today, I'll be reccing two new podficcers who have posted their first podfics fairly recently. I hope they record more!

Title: To Have and to Hold
Author: [livejournal.com profile] belmanoir
Reader: [livejournal.com profile] sionnain
Pairing: F/K/V
Rating: PG
Length: 6.1 mb, 6.37 minutes, 1042 words
Why I'm reccing this fic: This is a heart-warming story about Fraser and the Rays and how they walk in the RCMP contingent in a pride parade (but in the back, of course, so they won't ruin the aesthetic effect). It makes me grin at the banter and go 'awww' at the end. Sionnain seems to be a natural at podficcing, and does wonderful dialogue.

Title: Father Confessor
Author: [livejournal.com profile] keerawa
Reader: [livejournal.com profile] sundayscat
Characters: Vecchio family gen
Rating: PG-13
Length: 43.3 mb, 47:20 minutes, 6300 words.
Why I'm reccing this fic: This is one of my favorite stories by Keerawa, and it gives an outsider's perspective on Ray Vecchio and the rest of the Vecchio family through the years. Sundayscat reads it in a quiet, thoughtful manner, and I especially like the pauses that leave room to let the story to sink in.

Vecchio! *adores* I could talk forever about all the things I adore him for, but I think [livejournal.com profile] belmanoir's list pretty much covers it. So I'll just give that a big WORD, and do a picspam instead:

Every man should have some je ne sais quoi. *nods* )

Ahem. Right. Recs!

Title: Dysmas
Author: [livejournal.com profile] troyswann
Pairing: Gen (Vecchio, Fraser)
Rating: PGish
Length: ~4,600 words
Why I'm reccing this fic: This fic took my heart, beat it up and then left it weeping in a snow bank. And yet, I completely adore it anyway. The fic takes a sharp turn into AUland towards the end of Victoria's Secret, and features just spot-on characterization of Vecchio. His heart and his loyalty are the things I love most about Vecchio, and this fic is a shining example of both.

Brief excerpt. )

Dysmas

Title: Little Ray
Author: [livejournal.com profile] mondschein1
Pairing: Gen (Vegas!Vecchio)
Rating: PG-13?
Length: ~2,600 words
Why I'm reccing this fic: Oh, Vecchio! *sniffles* I love fics that deal with Vecchio's time in Vegas and this was one of the first ones I read that dealt with it in a serious way. I love the way this takes the Ray we all know and love and forces him to be The Bookman while still being Ray. Also, the formatting is a stroke of genius.

Brief excerpt. )

Little Ray

And now, after all that angst... some porn:

Title: Boys Like Me / Girls Like You
Author: [livejournal.com profile] catwalksalone
Pairing: Vecchio/Kowalski
Rating: NC-17
Length: ~1,700 words each
Why I'm reccing this fic: For reasons that don't need exploring at this juncture, Kowalski has been turned into a girl. And Vecchio? Poor Vecchio is trying so hard to be respectful and chivalrous, but it's really hard when girl!Kowalski is always there and horny and propositioning him.

Brief excerpt. )

Boys Like Me, and the sequel Girls Like You
[identity profile] belmanoir.livejournal.com
I adore Vecchio. In [livejournal.com profile] catwalksalone's fic "Trample Down Barbed Wire," there's a line, "Ray's heart does the skip, hop, jump thing he's taken to thinking of as his Vecchio-murmur." Yep, I've got one of those. But trying to explain why in any kind of comprehensive way would involve me making you watch the entirety of Seasons 1 and 2 and CotW1, and then every time Vecchio has a line, I would say "See? Did you see that right there? THAT." Because the man never did anything I didn't love. Even when he's being a complete asshole (which doesn't happen OFTEN but does happen), it feels real and believable and fucked-up and I love it. So I'm just going to make a random list of stuff I love about him.

I've got a thousand reasons, and each one is enough. )

As for recs...nearly every due South fic I have bookmarked has Vecchio in it. Choosing three that somehow encapsulated my love for him would be impossible. So I'm just going to rec one. Please, please read it:

Title: Faster than Sound
Author: [livejournal.com profile] troyswann
Pairing: gen (Fraser+Vecchio, Bob)
Rating: G? PG?
Length: 454 words
Why I'm reccing this fic: Set just after Victoria's Secret. This fic is incredibly short and Vecchio doesn't even have a speaking part, and yet everything I love about him, and about his capacity for love, and about his and Fraser's relationship, is right there.

Title: Rest Ye Merry
Author: [livejournal.com profile] brynnmck
Pairing: Fraser & Vecchio
Rating: PG
Length: 3200 words
Why I'm reccing this fic: This fic captures the essence of what I, especially, love in Christmas fic. It's gentle and funny and warm with love, which are also the things I love about Fraser and Ray Vecchio's relationship. The fic can be seen as either gen or pre-slash, but it doesn't really matter which; it's a story about friendship and the things each of these men give to each other, every day. Also, brynn has one of my favorite Vecchio voices, and even in this, her first dS fic, it shines right through. I've read this fic many times, and it's wonderful every time I do. A holiday treat!

Thank goodness for Amnesty Week, so I can rec some Fraser parental fics!

Title: The Heart's Compass
Author: [livejournal.com profile] zabira
Pairing: Fraser/Kowalski
Rating: PG-13
Length: 7,500 words
Why I'm reccing this fic: This was my favorite fic of the latest DS Match competition. Ray is an inadvertent time traveler, and he finds himself visiting Fraser's childhood repeatedly. Through Ray we get to meet Caroline, raising a child essentially alone in the middle of the far Northern prairies. She's strong, sensible, and full of unfettered affection for her son, who returns it openly. And once she's decided Ray is no threat, she welcomes this strange, intermittent companion for little Ben. Unfortunately, we know her future, and it's a tear-jerker, but Ray's presence in the then and the now, helps.

The Heart's Compass

Title: It's Like This Old Inuvit Story I Know
Author: Pru ([livejournal.com profile] rageprufrock)
Pairing: Fraser/Kowalski
Rating: PG
Length: 4,390 words
Why I'm reccing this fic: "Meet the parents" is an often-dreaded ritual for every new couple--we see a flashback here to how it wasn't so great for Ray with Stella's parents. It's even worse for Ray when he and Fraser aren't even dating, and Fraser's father's dead, yet he's suddenly being visited by an annoying old Mountie. Who's making snippy remarks about Ray's lack of child-bearing hips. Maybe he's just going crazy instead ....

A brief excerpt )

It's Like This Old Inuvit Story I Know

Title: Home Schooling
Author: [livejournal.com profile] luzula
Pairing: Gen
Rating: G
Length: ~1,200 words
Why I'm reccing this fic: This is a perfectly characterized moment of young Ben studying with his grandmother when his father arrives, and we get to see two generations of parental interaction. In one short sketch, we see the influences surrounding Ben--order, intellectualism, reserve, snippiness, avoidance of conflict, distancing--that became part of his personality. Surely this must be canon.

A brief excerpt )

Title: There's No Stopping Her
Author: [livejournal.com profile] alex51324
Pairing: Gen (or F/K pre-slash, if you roll that way)
Rating: G
Length: 888 words
Why I'm reccing this fic: I couldn't help but rec all Kowalskis fics. I adore Barbara! Here, Fraser has been self-sufficient for a very long time, so he is completely unprepared for the Barbara Kowalski juggernaut when she insists on mothering him, too. Alex writes a Barbara who has an almost naive view of her place in her grown son's life, and now that of his friend as well. Fortunately it's endearing, if a little embarrassing for the guys.

A brief excerpt )

There's No Stopping Her

Title: Son of Zorro, Take Previous
Author: [livejournal.com profile] brigantine1
Pairing: Fraser/Kowalski (could be Gen, if you roll that way)
Rating: PG
Length: 551 words
Why I'm reccing this fic: Another ultimate Mom fic! Barbara could be the perfectly innocent, clueless Mom in this one, too, but I like to imagine her here with a tiny hint of evil. Because I'd bet Stanley was a handful when he was a teen, and boy does she have an opening here to get a little of her own back! Fraser is bemused at first, but is seduced to the dark Barbara side by the end. Absolutely made of hilarious!

A brief excerpt )

Son of Zorro, Take Previous

Title: Homologated / Homologated 2: Sunday Dinner
Author: Otsoko
Pairing: Fraser/Kowalski
Rating: PG
Length: 3,934 words
Why I'm reccing this fic: Otsoko builds a beautiful portrait of Damian, and how Ray sees clearly that he's a product of his era, class, and heritage. Still, Ray values his approval and advice, and translates every silent clue from their time working together on the GTO into communication. Barbara is a little more direct, but between the two of them, they make it clear they just want their son to be happy. Somehow in the midst of all the manly brusqueness is a surprisingly sweet message of support.

Well, this is it, kids. But I thought I'd try and go out with a bang, or at least an explosion of some sort.

1. Stargate Atlantis.

I know almost nothing about this fandom, other than there is a guy named Joe with experimental hair and a guy named Rodney who is whiny and Canadian and they are very, very gay. Sometimes they are gay together.

Also, Claudia Black and Ben Browder were on the show, but not as their Farscape characters.

However, I did promise that we would visit other planets in this set, and I like this ficlet an awful lot, even if I'm not entirely sure what the hell is going on.

Searching for Benton Fraser, by [livejournal.com profile] apetslife. No warnings, although watch out for the crack.

In which Ray goes on a journey. )

2. Firefly.

Once upon a time, Joss Whedon decided that a cheerleader who fought vampires wasn't wacky enough, and what he'd really always wanted to write was a spaghetti western set in the future, out in space where people randomly spoke Chinese and sometimes wore funny hats.

Because he is Joss Whedon, he got his wish. Firefly was fabulous and funny and got really sort of fucked over by the network in a spectacular way.

But this is not that story. This is the story of a girl visiting earth, and her love for Ray Kowalski's car.

Shiny, by [livejournal.com profile] dsudis. G, Ray/Kaylee implied.

In which there is a promise of pizza. )

3. Men With Guns.

Another C6D crossover, this time with a movie that is not quite as terrible as Aspen Extreme, although I wouldn't say much more than that. I love it despite being well aware of the flaws, because a)Mamet dancing, b) I like movies with fucked up characters and guns, and c) did I mention Mamet dancing?

Anyway. I think what I love most about MWG is the fabulous fic that people have written for it. And one of my absolute favorites is this crossover, which features a very difficult recasting of the film using Fraser and Ray Kowalski. it's managed beautifully, and even if you dislike the movie (gratuitous violence and drug use aren't for everyone, I suppose) give the rewrite a try.

Out from Under, by [livejournal.com profile] brigantine1. F/K, PG-13.

In which Fraser goes to find someone he's lost. )

And a bonus rec, just because you're all my favorites:

4. Starship Troopers/Sgt. Preston of the Yukon.

Now, before you get all excited, this is not exactly a dS crossover. But it features a talking dog, and a Mountie from the Yukon who is, FRTDNEATJ, in space, and also Starship Troopers. I couldn't pass that up.

Ichneumon, by camwyn. Gen, PG.

In which there are alien probes and repressed memories. )

So. It's been fun, thanks for reading, and everyone should feel free to add crossover recs that I've omitted in the comments. There are tons of great ones out there, and unfortunately I couldn’t include even a small subset of the stories I love in a short set of posts. Plus, I never know if I'm missing the Best Crossover Ever.

So when I said we would visit new planets, I forgot that first I had these other recs to post. Which are all set on Earth, mostly, maybe, although there is a House that defies physics and a brief argument between Thatcher and God.

There are no geese, but if you find that sort of thing interesting (and you should, because it's AWESOME) you must go read [Bad username or site: @ livejournal.com]'s Don't Drink, Don't Smoke (What Do You Do), a dS/Hot Fuzz crossover. It features Ray's lost passport, an angry swan, and a Fraser who is officially if temporarily dead after a slight misunderstanding with the Canadian High Commission.

In which this does not count as a rec, even though I strongly suggest that you go read this story right this minute. )

Ahem. And now I have a few other suggestions. If you're looking for something to read. (Hey, we're fans. When are we NOT looking for things to read?

First person to comment with "when we're busy writing for NaNoWriMo" gets a very strongly worded rant about the importance of balancing one's life and taking time to do other things, so don't start with me. This is my year, people, and the fact that I'm already behind is meaningless.)

1. Homicide: Life on the Streets.

I had (okay, have) the biggest crush on Tim Bayliss. He's smart, he's sensitive, he's trying very, very hard to be zen. He screws up, he gets pissed, he tries again. He wants things he can't have, and eventually he breaks a little bit. Okay, a lot.

It's a fantastic show, and if you haven't seen it, you should. There's a full series box set (The perfect gift for the fangrrl who has everything? Television on DVD!), and a movie, and a metric fuckton of crossover episodes with Law & Order.

Not convinced? Really?

Here, have a fic in which Bayliss finally meets the right guy, thanks to Fraser and Ray and with no help at all from Francesca.

(FWIW, Bayliss is wrong about the 401, because the Beltway traffic would eat that road for breakfast and then have the 404 as a midmorning snack. I'll take the 404 during rush hour over the Beltway on a Sunday afternoon anytime.)

Unionville, by [livejournal.com profile] umbo. R, F/K, Bayliss/Smithbauer. And the sequel ficlet, Compassion. Bayliss/Smithbauer, R.

In which there is a mugging, and then a robbery, and then a car theft. And then Tim Bayliss goes to a wedding and meets a former hockey player. )

2. House of Leaves.

It would seem that I have an affinity for things that are bigger on the inside. Or for evil disguised as something wholesome. Or possibly both at the same time, with an added dash of meddling ghosts.

All of that aside, this is the clearest example that I can imagine for the argument that crossovers, when done well, are somehow better than either fandom on its own. Because this fic gains so much from the book that it is based in, all of the twists and characters and related stories and complications, and it becomes richer than the book because of the layered history that I (and many of you) have with the main characters. If there were one story that I would love to see turned into an entire universe of things written by all the fannish authors I love best, it would be this.

The Fraser Record (Excerpts), by [livejournal.com profile] custardpringle. F/K-ish, R.

In which there is a House. )

3. Monty Python.

Yep. You read that right. Think of it as a cracktastic chaser for the unsettling experimentalism of the previous rec.

It turns out that Ray was right, after all. It was a quest for the Holy Grill. Also, there is never a Kmart's around when you need one.

Monty Python and the Holy Grill, by [livejournal.com profile] snowee. Gen, G-ish.

In which there is SPAM. Spam, spam, spam, spam... )

Dear Mods,

May I make one more post? Pretty please? I promise it contains no Sentinel badfic. It's just that I have three four more stories to rec, and if I put them in this post it'll look all off-balance and stuff. Plus it wouldn't be fair to make any of the remaining recs follow Monty Python. The authors might get smited or something. I don't want to be responsible for people being smitten. Er. Smited.

Title: The one with the elf
Author: Anna S ([livejournal.com profile] eliade)
Pairing: Gen
Rating: G
Length: 954 words
Why I'm reccing this fic: Here is Grade A Due South characterization. Fraser and Ray have a moment in the bullpen, just like any other moment they've shared at the station, except what comes out of Fraser's mouth is pure crack. And Ray explodes at it, just like at all of Fraser's other weirdnesses, and then they go on. I'm not sure which is funnier, Fraser and Ray's usual interactions or Fraser's bizarre confession.

A brief excerpt )

The one with the elf

Title: I Was a Canadian Zombie
Author: [livejournal.com profile] aerye
Pairing: Fraser/Kowalski
Rating: R
Length: 1,760 words
Why I'm reccing this fic: Aerye's fic is a little outside the norm, not just because it's an AU--she also uses an OC narrator. And the prompt she wrote to? What happens when a small-town Canadian boy falls in love with a hot-blooded American who comes to town with a modern dance troupe? And things can only get worse as the town is attacked by ZOMBIES. Her Frank the Zombie is hilariously deadpan as he and his friends munch their way through Inuvik, while befriending the local Mountie and his gorgeous boytoy dancer. Proof that Fraser can be polite to anyone.

I Was a Canadian Zombie

Title: Ray Likes It Red
Author: Isis ([livejournal.com profile] isiscolo)
Pairing: Fraser/Kowalski UST, sort of
Rating: G
Length: 1,500 words
Why I'm reccing this fic: The humor in this fic comes from Isis's masterful use of Ray as the unreliable narrator. Despite a tight Ray POV, the reader, knowing Turnbull's tactics and being aware of Fraser's adventures with the previous Ray, figures out what's going on at the Consulate while Ray comes to an amusingly incorrect conclusion.

Title: Benton's earliest memories are of stories
Author: [livejournal.com profile] omphale23
Pairing: gen
Rating: G
Length: 200 words
Why I'm reccing this fic: [livejournal.com profile] omphale23 posted this snippet, unremarked and unnamed, in the midst of a bunch of polls and event planning. I nearly missed it! This is a glimpse of Benton on that hinge point of his life, mother gone, father absent, trying to adapt to life with his grandparents. Snippets rarely make me cry, but this one did.

Author: [livejournal.com profile] sisterofdream
Pairing: gen, but the author suggests Fraser/Kowalski
Rating: G
Length: 6,800 words
Why I'm reccing this fic: So. Canonically, due South has a Chicago cop partnered up half-time with a Canadian Mountie who solves a peculiar assortment of Major (and not) Crime with his bat-ears, licks evidence, and brings a deaf half-wolf who can read lips with him to crime scenes.

The rest of Team Reality has done an excellent job of sleight-of-handing my brain away from this fact with angst, hard crime, and hot sex. This author turns on the spotlight. You don't believe me? Check out what Charlie, the poor forensic guy, has to say:

Title: Crossed Paths
Author: [livejournal.com profile] china_shop
Pairing: None (can be read as F/K/V, but it's gen)
Rating: G
Length: 1100 words
Why I'm reccing this fic: This fic gave me something I never, ever knew I needed until I read it, and then I was completely blown away--Vecchio on the quest. It's from the POV of some scientists who run into the boys while they're all looking for the hand of Franklin together! I pretty much died of love. Plus the story is super cute in pretty much every way.

Title: Solstice
Author: [livejournal.com profile] troyswann
Pairing: None (again! What are the odds?)
Rating: um...PG-13 for some violence?
Length: ~6500 words.
Why I'm reccing this fic: Because it's AMAZING. Vecchio is losing it after Vegas, and when he's attacked, he runs...to Canada. There's a whole part at the end with the three of them that basically made my heart grow about four sizes. Seriously, my lungs are feeling squished, guys.

Author: [livejournal.com profile] brynnmck
Pairing: F/K/V
Rating: PG-13
Length: ~1750
Why I'm reccing this fic: Because it may actually be the cutest thing I have ever read. Kidfic! Fraser is decorating Halloween cookies with their daughter while Ray and Ray watch. And seriously, cutest fucking thing EVER.

Title: A Quiet Morning at Home
Author: [livejournal.com profile] dsudis
Pairing: Bob/Caroline, Buck
Rating: G
Length: 787 words
Why I'm reccing this fic: This story shows Bob on the morning before his wedding, with Buck helping him prepare himself. It's a very thoughtful little story about the similarities and differences between partnership and marriage.

A Quiet Morning at Home

Title: Missing Pieces
Author: [livejournal.com profile] aukestrel
Pairing: Fraser/Smithbauer
Rating: NC-17
Length: 25 pages in pdf format
Why I'm reccing this fic: This is backstory for the (completely and totally awesome) AU "Strange Loops", but it can be read separately, too. I don't know why this pushes my buttons so hard--it's not the hockey thing, because despite being Swedish, I have never watched a hockey game in my life (although between this and Hawks and Hands, my mind firmly associates hockey with gay sex). I think it's that this relationship shows Fraser in a different light compared to his relationship with the Rays. It's not true love so much as buddy-sex, but there's still a trust between them, because they were childhood friends and know each other so well. And my GOD, the sex is hot.

Title: Come With Me
Author: [livejournal.com profile] zabira
Pairing: Fraser/Victoria
Rating: PG-13
Length: about 10.000 words
Why I'm reccing this fic: This is a new story, so you've probably seen it announced, but it affected me so much that I just want to make sure as many people as possible read it. [livejournal.com profile] zabira shows Victoria to be a complex and human character, with a backstory that explains so much about her. It doesn't redeem her completely--she still does what she does--but it makes me heart ache not just for Fraser, but for her too. They are both so young when they first meet, and seen through Victoria's eyes, Fraser just kind of--shines through. He's straight and true and tries so hard, and sees and respects her a way that noone else has before, and he does what he has to do, but he just doesn't see what his actions are doing to her. It made me cry.

Title: The Small Indian Mongoose Is Not Immune to the Cobra's Venom
Author: Brigantine ([livejournal.com profile] brigantine1)
Pairing: Kowalski/OC, Fraser/Kowalski
Rating: NC-17
Length: ~5,400 words
Why I'm reccing this fic: Beautiful Ray backstory. Woven in between clips of another run-in between our guys and Warfield are snippets of Ray's past, as he transformed himself from a skinny, pants-wetting, geeky Polish kid to someone who knew how to take a punch, then someone who knew how to throw a punch--all in the service of standing up for himself and other people who didn't deserve to get bullied. It's all the bits that went between the bank robbery and Ray's decision to become a cop. And it makes me flail with love for him. (As I do.) Rikki-tikki-tavi, indeed.

Title: Home Schooling
Author: Luzula ([livejournal.com profile] luzula)
Pairing: Gen
Rating: G
Length: ~1,200 words
Why I'm reccing this fic: And now Fraser's childhood--a scene of one afternoon in Ben's boyhood. In a few short paragraphs, Luzula clearly outlines the influences that made Fraser the adult that he was: his grandmother's emotional reserve, intellectual interest and snippiness; his grandfather's discomfort with conflict; his father's inability to connect, or even see him; and his absent mother's assertiveness, coming to the fore in his personality. A truly outstanding character sketch.

Title: The Border Between Life and Death
Author: Speranza ([livejournal.com profile] cesperanza)
Pairing: Fraser/Kowalski, Kowalski/Stella, Kowalski/OC, Fraser/OC
Rating: NC-17
Length: ~21,750 words
Why I'm reccing this fic: And what would a recs list be without Speranza? Here is her tour de force backstory piece. Ray, distraught over Stella dating other men, looks back on their history, from childhood friendship through the divorce. Once he pulls his head out of his own grief, he realizes he knows nothing about Fraser's history, and applies his detective skills to discovering things about his partner he had no idea about (including an even angstier piece of personal history than we've ever seen). Only after they share their pains can they move on from the past.

Er, hi. *waves* I've been lurking in the fandom for almost a year now and this is me finally getting up the nerve to contribute something a little more solid than the occasional quick link: three quick links with exposition! It took me a bit to pick out three fics to rec for the Mumbojumbo Jujitsu challenge, since apparently that sort of thing takes up a solid quarter of my 200+ DS bookmarks, but I managed it at last so here's a handful of short-but-sweets.

Title:In the Sewers He Lies Dreaming
Author: [livejournal.com profile] spuffyduds
Pairing: Gen: Fraser, Ray Vecchio
Rating: R for language and ANCIENT EVIL
Length: around 2100 words
Why I'm reccing this fic: In a crossover with anything by H. P. Lovecraft, there are basically two options. You can shoot for a creeping horror á la the original, or you can go in the exact opposite direction and head for Crack City. This is a case of the latter, with a little D&D thrown in for garnish. I don't know about you, but to me that sounds like a recipe for success.

A brief excerpt )

Title: Here at the end of all things
Author: [livejournal.com profile] shihadchick
Pairing: F/K
Rating: PG
Length: around 1700 words
Why I'm reccing this fic: This was written for [livejournal.com profile] ds_flashfiction's Apocalypse challenge a couple of years ago, and when I went on my new fandom fic binge last year it had so much atypical hope that I think it's the only one I bookmarked right away. If you haven't read it before, see if you can guess which religion's version of the end of the world is happening before the final author's note.

Title: Six is the Loneliest Number
Author: [livejournal.com profile] lordessrenegade
Pairing: F/K pre-slash
Rating: PG-13
Length: about 1300 words
Why I'm reccing this fic: Sometimes a hint of all the hilarious and terrifying potential of a scenario is better than watching everything play out. I definitely wouldn't object to a follow-up to this story, but imagining the trouble RayK and Fraser can get into while waiting for the effects of a mystical doodad to wear off is plenty of fun on its own.

Title: Into A Far Country
Author: [livejournal.com profile] keerawa
Pairing: Fraser/RayK
Rating: PG13
Length: 9k
Why I'm reccing this fic: because [livejournal.com profile] keerawa creates a moody, dark world in which the lines between real and magical have blurred and shifted. She gives us this story of Ray and Fraser, together but not, with Fraser damaged almost beyond recovery and Ray trying so hard to overcome that, but afraid. Afraid, but trying anyway, even when he's clearly in over his head.

Author: [livejournal.com profile] phenyx_tp
Pairing: Fraser, RayK, RayV
Rating: G
Length: 3,690 words
Why I'm reccing this fic: because this story is a bittersweet tale of loss, of grief, and of healing. Little Boy Lost tells the story of a transformed Fraser and the way Kowalski and Vecchio deal with the transformation, each trying to do their best for Fraser, trying hard to do the right thing each in their own way. This is also a story that showcases the instinctive understanding of Fraser that RayK has, which makes them such a powerful duet.

Title: Les Revenants
Author: [livejournal.com profile] simplystars
Pairing: Fraser/RayK
Rating: R
Length: 3,4450 words
Why I'm reccing this fic: because I have a soft spot for zombie movies and this is what a due South zombie movie would be like. This story is written by [livejournal.com profile] simplystars's dark twin, the one who rips your heart out, stomps on it, brushes off the dust and hands it back to you. Bleak and real, this story moves along at a breakneck pace, never giving you a moment to catch your breath. Ray's narrative is matter of fact and to the point, but in the back of your mind is the itchy feeling that Ray's not looking too carefully at what is happening because he's afraid that if he does, he will start screaming and never stop. And he can't afford to do that.

Title: Sea Change
Author: Starfish ([livejournal.com profile] the_star_fish)
Pairing: Fraser/Kowalski
Rating: NC-17
Length: ~14,400 words
Why I'm reccing this fic: A sea cruise fic! (Not to be confused with a certain other fantabulous cruiseliner fic, which I don't think I can rec because it's an RPS crossover?) Anyway, here's a chance to see Fraser and Ray on the way to Acapulco, with shorts and sandals on, sipping fruity rum drinks, and playing shuffleboard. Hee! Somewhere amidst the karaoke and the dirty old ladies after Fraser's body, the guys stumble across a mystery, and eventually each other. Shipboard romance for the win!

Title: Sempervirens
Author: DancesWithChopstick ([livejournal.com profile] danceswchopstck)
Pairing: gen, Fraser & Kowalski friendship
Rating: PG-13
Length: ~5,500 words
Why I'm reccing this fic: A wonderful epistolary fic--the exchange of letters after the adventure and Fraser has moved back to Canada. After an event gone bad, Ray quits the CPD and travels to Arizona and California, sharing his experiences and emotions with Fraser. Fraser's support is rock-solid throughout. An absolute highlight is Ray's report of taking a job as a substitute teacher, and the speech he gives his kids the first day of Civics class. Truly fabulous character voices and friendship fic.

This challenge was difficult. "Fics of my Heart"? I can't even narrow it down to 10. I could give you a list of my top 50. Eventully I decided to hold it to stories that haunt me.

Title: Ordinary Days
Author: MarySueFanfic/[livejournal.com profile] busaikko
Characters: Ray Kowalski, Fraser
Rating: R
Length: 2,700 words
Why I'm reccing this fic: In this story, Ray is caring for Fraser, who's internal landscape has overwhelmed his ability to interact with the outside world. Ray's quiet, matter-of-fact narration of what his life has become seeps into your heart. It is emotionally devastating, yes. But this is also the most uplifting story I have ever read, in any genre. Truly unforgettable.

Title: Vibrato
Author: Salieri/[livejournal.com profile] troyswann
Characters: Dief, Fraser, Fraser Sr., some guy named Phil
Rating: PG
Length: 600 words
Why I'm reccing this fic: This is a tiny little 600 word ficlet written from Diefenbaker's POV, in which almost nothing happens. But the eerie, lyrical imagery has stayed with me since I first read it, and the implications of Dief's perception of Dead!Bob are subtly terrifying.

No taste - it'd be half the story.

Vibrato.

Title: Stalker
Author: Rentgirl2/ [livejournal.com profile] therentgirls
Pairing: Fraser/RayK
Rating: PG
Length: 12,800 words
Why I'm reccing this fic: Where else can you find a completely in-character Bad!Ben, despair, love, redemption, and one hell of an unreliable narrator? I think it speaks to me on a personal level, because this is a story about Fraser feeling guilty about harming others by misusing his gifts. And, really, that's the only thing worth feeling guilty about.
