Hello, I'm your
ds_recsredux guest reccer for February! *offers bannock and bark tea to everyone* While I'm a very enthusiastic F/K fangirl through and through, there are moments when I like to read stories
about rare pairings.
What do I mean by rare pairings? Basically, couples who have had very few stories written about them. Throughout the month, I'll post about a specific due South character and his (or her) lesser-known partners.
Today's post is all about Fraser.
I'll be the first one to admit that Fraser/Billy Tallent wasn't too hard of a sell for me. They can bond on their Canadianess even though their life experiences are as far away from each other as they can possibly be.
kelliem 's Northern Comfort (F/Billy Tallent, F/RayK pre-slash, NC-17) was the fic that made me realize the high level of yumminess shared by those two. In this deliciously long fic, a post Hard Core Logo Billy meets Fraser after being mugged. Fraser, whose feelings for RayK are strong, is both charmed and intrigued by Billy in ways that go beyond Billy's physical likeness to RayK. Their interaction is adult and sensual with just the right amount of angst.
After all, Billy is still reeling from the aftermath of the HCL reunion and Fraser had decided to (stubbornly) not to tell RayK about his feelings for him. As the story opens, RayK has gone on vacation, Billy is hurting and Fraser doesn't know whether to give in to his attraction to Billy. By the way, this story has an F/K sequel made that much sweeter because of what happened between Billy and Fraser.
Meanwhile,
zoetrope 's The Simple Life (Fraser/Billy Tallent, past Fraser/RayK, NC-17) is a tasty fic with some angst at the edges. In this story, Fraser finds a beaten-up Billy Tallent in an alleyway in Toronto. Once Fraser gets over the initial shock of meeting a man who looks so much like RayK (who moved to Arizona at the end of the Quest many years back), Fraser helps Billy while assuming Billy is a male prostitute. Fraser pays for Billy's 'services' a few times before proposing going back to his cabin in the Yukon for a month. What follows is a rollercoaster ride of sexin' balanced with both funny and tense scenes.
Fraser/Leoben is not something I've seen much of in fandom (and, hey if I'm wrong, do post a link or two to Fraser/Leoben fics!).
elementalv 's Soul Surrender (Fraser/RayK, Fraser/Leoben one sided, NC-17) opens up with a frightening dining scene between Fraser and Leoben. There's a sharp knife involved.
From there, the story goes back and forth between how was it that Fraser ended up in a Cylon basestar, why is Leoben obsessed with Fraser and what happened back on Earth. For Fraser, who had been living quite happily with RayK after the Quest, holding on to his humanity, to his soul, is the only thing he can do.
elementalv 's writing talents are in full display as you feel for Fraser. A nightmare, a responsibility and a fractured Benton who is trying to find a way out blend together into one of the scariest and labyrinthine stories I've ever read. The ending is pitch-perfect as Fraser finds his anchor once more.
Fraser/Joe Dick fics tend to be more tongue-in-cheek than anything else. Aukestrel's The Distance Between (Fraser/Joe Dick, NC-17) gives us a truly broken Fraser instead. Set sometime after the Victoria arc, we meet a darker Fraser. One who chooses to whore himself to anonymous men as a punishment for having been swept off his feet by the treacherous Victoria Metcalf. He meets an equally lost Joe Dick. While not quite a downward spiral, their encounters are not particularly happy ones either. So, why read this story? Because this is one way Fraser could have gone in due South, because the level of writing transcends brilliance, because the sex is hot and intellectual and terrifyingly human. Because everyone is fully drawn and complex and real. A long and hot and interesting read.
Fraser/Brian Larson is a pairing that (to date) has only one story.
brigantine1 's Leeward (past Fraser/RayK, pre-slash for Fraser/Brian Larson, PG) is a sequel to an
aerye fic that ends with RayK leaving Fraser for Ray Vecchio. The Fraser in this story is older--he's pushing 50 according to Brian--and nearly closed off from everyone. Even Dief's companionship is not enough to keep Fraser up from freezing up inside out so to speak. Detective Brian Larson notices the many things that Sergeant Benton Fraser has worked so hard to hide: his loneliness, his despair, the many disturbing ways Fraser can let go of everything.
Yes, this is a story about what happened to Fraser after he lost it all. But, thankfully, this is also a story about second chances, about hope, about Fraser thawing. What I wouldn't give to see what happened after the story ended, to see Fraser opening up, moving on.
So, which one is *your* favourite Fraser/? fic?

Date: 2010-02-06 06:00 am (UTC)I reread all of these fics. If I happen to be feeling kinda meh/blue, I'll read The Simple Life followed by Leeward (or viceversa).
Fraser is so freakin' broken, and Brian makes him take those first steps toward healing...
Gods, yes, Aka! Why, oh, WHY won't anyone write some more Fraser/Brian fics?!
Also, apparently, whenever I don't pair Fraser with RayK, I go for angst like whoa! Who knew?

Date: 2010-02-08 12:58 am (UTC)Land of Beyond (http://www.squidge.org/dsa/archive/10/landof.html) is a Fraser/Bobby Marlowe (from Da Vinci's Inquest) fic by BJ Cochrane. (There's been another, more recent fic in this pairing, which was also good, but I can't remember the title or author. /o\)
And I'm also REALLY fond of Fraser/Smithbauer stories!
