Guest Recs: Make me cry--then fix it! (1/3)
Hey there. I'm here to guest rec, and I like me some angst--but only if it's resolved! Yes, it's true...I am a delicate flower who can't bear to be broken and not put back together. (I have RL for that.) So my theme is fics that make me cry--but then fix it. You've probably already read these. Well, that's good. Because I'm going to do something a little different and excerpt the section of each fic where I inevitably start bawling. So, BEWARE OF THE EXCERPTS; for lo, they will be HEAVILY SPOILERY.
1. Simply Ray by Ardent (
ardent_muses) - F/K, rated NC-17
Fraser and Ray are all set to live happily ever after in Canada. But then they fuck it all up by making assumptions and not talking. This is one of my absolute favorites dS fics. The conflict is very realistic, very true to the characters.
Spoilery Excerpt:
Fraser looked a little shifty-eyed, which was definitely not one of his usual looks. "I just thought it would be fun. And you could see some people. Other than me. I know it's very isolated here for you, working on the cabin. You must get . . . lonely."
What the fuck? It sounded like Fraser was trying to find him other friends, or a date or something. Maybe that was it. He wanted Ray to meet a nice man and settle down. Somewhere else. "I don't get lonely except for you, Frase," he said quietly.
Fraser looked at him sharply. "Ray, I . . ." he started, then stopped. "I'm sorry, Ray. I know this hasn't been what you expected. What you planned."
Uh oh. Sudden terror squeezed Ray's insides. He wasn't sure where this was going, but he was pretty certain it wasn't anywhere good.
"The Territories aren't for everyone. I knew that," Fraser's voice took on a hard, angry edge. "I should have known that."
Ray had to stop him. Had to stop this. "Fra--"
2. Like a House on Fire by Beth H. & Kellie Matthews (
bethbethbeth &
kelliem) - F/K, rated NC-17
I know you've all read this one and already know how wonderful and genius it is. Fraser letting himself go?!?! Ray meeting up with him two years after CotW, and their mutual discovery of what's been missing in their lives. The moment when they realize it just won't work out...*sobs*...and the moment when they realize that of course it's not going to magically work out--they gotta put some effort into it. And the town gossip once they start in on those, ahem, "efforts."
Spoilery Excerpt:
Dief grumbled, but shoved his nose under Ray's hand and Ray figured that was an agreement. He stood up, his bag in his left hand, and put out his right hand, sort of staring past Fraser's shoulder, trying to make it look like he was looking at him. "Well, thanks for everything. It's been real, Benton."
Fraser hesitated for a moment, then clasped his hand. His hand felt cold. Ray couldn't ever remember that happening before. Fraser's hands had always been warm, even on the coldest days. Before he could really process that, Fraser was pulling him in close, wrapping his arms around him, tight, so tight he could barely breathe. Against his ear he could feel Fraser's warm breath as he spoke.
"No, Ray, it hasn't been real at all."
He thought he felt the brush of lips against his cheek, and then Fraser was pulling back. The shock of it made him forget he wasn't going to look at Fraser. Their eyes met. Fraser's were shadowed and full of regret. Ray flinched, looking away. God, and he thought it had been bad the last time. He lifted a hand, reaching out, then let it fall again before he could touch Fraser.
"Sorry," he whispered.
"Me too," Fraser echoed hoarsely.
3. Too Far by
arrow00 - F/K, rated NC-17
This fic is brilliant. Fraser tries to have no expectations of Ray, but he can't seem to stop himself. When the metaphorical rug is jerked out from under him, he falls hard. And yet the entire fic's from Ray's POV.
Spoilery Excerpt:
He steps out into the hallway and hesitates outside of Fraser's door when he hears a heavy thunk, loud, like something was thrown against the wall. Then there's this choking sound, low, and for exactly one split-second Ray thinks Fraser's being attacked or something—he even reaches under his arm for a gun that isn't there—but then the sound repeats, and Ray's legs feel suddenly weak, and he has to lean hard against the wall. Because that's—Fraser is—
Fraser is—
Ray goes back to his room door and opens it quietly, then slams it shut hard. He takes a deep breath, and then knocks three times on Fraser's door.
After a couple of long seconds, Fraser's voice, muffled but sounding totally normal, says, "One moment, Ray. I'm still getting dressed."
This, from a guy who a week ago stripped naked in the ball-freezing cold and then rolled around in the snow, his face and chest flushed bright pink, his stomach heaving with gasps of laughter. "No, really, Ray. You simply have to try it sometime."
A minute or two later Fraser steps out, turning to say something to Dief before closing the door. Fraser's face is clean-shaven, his hair tidy and brushed back. And if Ray hadn't known, hadn't heard it for himself, he never would have noticed the tinge of red in Fraser's eyes.

I shall bookmark all of these for reading when I need a good smile. The happy endings are always best after some heart-wrenching aren't they?
