Beyond Embarrassment, About a Dog, Interrogation

My introduction to dS fic was, pretty much, that [livejournal.com profile] kalpurna sat me down at a computer and said "Okay, start with Speranza's stories." So I sat down, and started on Speranza's fic, and at some point discovered that the sun had come back up and I needed to go to class.

In any case: my starter pack is, therefore, three by Speranza.

Title: Beyond Embarrassment
Pairing: F/K
Rating: NC-17
Length: 65K
Why I'm reccing this fic: Absolute first dS fic I ever read, and I just keep rereading it obsessively. It's Ray's POV, but what gets me and scares me, every time is the way this fic's Fraser seems to want to be dead-- how firmly he's convinced himself that he can't live his life and have what he wants (that is, Ray).

Ray found himself falling back against the sofa, falling deep into the kiss, his face trapped between Fraser's cold hands, his mouth opening for Fraser's warm, soft tongue.

Christ, what was happening here? Some part of him was now completely certain that this was a dream--a hot dream, a wet dream, a weird dream, the weirdest dream he'd ever had. His dreams were generally pretty mundane--your typical late for school, late for work, late for your wedding type of thing, where somehow you managed to show up without any pants. But this--this was just nuts. Making out with a dirty, hatless, bleeding, cold, dead Fraser on the sofa in the middle of the night.

Maybe it was a sign. Look how much had to go wrong in the world before this scenario (Fraser's hot tongue pushing into his mouth, Fraser's warming hands cupping his face) could take place. Fraser was almost never dirty, rarely hatless, never cold, and had certainly never died before.

Why I'm reccing this fic: This is one of those premises that ought to be a comedy, and just funny all the way through, and then turns out to be a seriously good drama instead. There's comedy in it, of course, because it's dS casefic and Dief-centric and how can it not. But what I really love is the way Diefenbaker describes the relationship between Fraser and Ray in terms of how wolves would relate to each other, and how that's what finally gets Fraser to buy a clue. That bit of dialogue is, honestly one of my favorites ever for accurately describing the Fraser/Kowalski pairing.

"I think he wants you to," Dief replied, brow furrowed in thought. "He's sending all the signals. And I think it would make you--" Fraser watched as Dief patted his heart with the palm of his hand, "--happy," and really, Fraser thought, it was amazing how close the sign for "happy" was to the sign for "heart attack." Close enough for government work, even in Canada.

"That's--ridiculous," Fraser managed to stammer. "That's just-- He--"

"
He shows you his throat," Dief signed. "All the time."

"That doesn't-- That--" But in his mind, he could suddenly picture the pale white of Ray's exposed throat.

Why I'm reccing this fic: Another story where you get to sit there and glare at the screen and go FRASER. BUY A DAMN CLUE ALREADY. And then he does, and it just whaps him upside the head, and it is so very satisfying. Plus, the number of people who apparently want to kill Fraser for being a good citizen is truly staggering-- and yet, somehow, not surprising at all.

"Well, whenever I see her, she yells, 'I'll kill you, Commie!' That's the other thing," Fraser added with an embarrassed cough. "She thinks I'm a--"

"Communist, right. Because of the uniform, right." Ray pulled his own notebook out from his back pocket, jotted this down. "Crazy capitalist killer bag-lady. Madge. What's her real name, Fraser?"

Fraser debated pretending not to know, but then relented. "Margaret O'Neill," he said. "I found out by--"

"I don't wanna know." Ray finished scribbling the name. "You think Maggie could get a gun?"

"Madge seemed to be able to obtain a staggering variety of objects."

Considering the quality and quantity of Speranza's work in fandom, I think there should be a "Speranza Starter Pack Challenge" ;)
Seriously, it's so hard to choose just 3 of her stories! I'd probably go with Kowalski is Bleeding, With 6 You Get Eggroll and Enduring Distance, I reread them the most. Or maybe Hanged Man or Merry Go Round or A Moment Of Insight or ... ARRGH!
I admire you quite a lot for being able to choose! :)
