Practical Diplomacy, Black Ice, and Mixing

Title: Practical Diplomacy
Author: [livejournal.com profile] mrsronweasley
Pairing: K/F
Rating: NC-17
Length: 14,000 words

Why I'm reccing this fic: I'm a sucker for academic AUs, and this reads right--both as a retelling of the characters, and as a fictional description of academia. Plus, I love the dead!Bob moments. The idea of Ray as a successful professor, complete with side projects and advisees, is really well done here, as is Fraser's awkwardness and idealism as a grad student.

Finally, did I mention the hot sex?

“Dad,” he began instead, “what are you doing here? And why aren’t you -”

“Lying in the ground, where I was last seen?” his father interrupted.

“Well.” Ben thought about it. “Yes. In fact, why aren’t you?”

“It got dull, son! This way I get to exercise the old limbs, get some life back in them, if you catch my drift. Get some air, converse with my only son. That kind of thing.” Ben stared as his father attempted to get the attention of the young man working the bar at the other end of the room and failed. “They never see me. Why is that, do you think?”

“Because you’re – dead?”

Title: Black Ice
Author: [livejournal.com profile] keerawa
Pairing: Gen (maybe F/K pre-slash)
Rating: Teen
Length: 2,900 words

Why I'm reccing this fic: Fraser's voice, complete with his ability to notice detail, is beautiful in this. There's a richness of description and a melancholy that comes through it that really works for such an introspective piece.

Wind and ice. Flowing rivers of cars. Tall cliffs of office buildings. A landscape built entirely by people, for people, with beauty and dangers all its own.

Title: Mixing
Author: [livejournal.com profile] slidellra
Pairing: F/K
Rating: R
Length: 2,300 words

Why I'm reccing this fic: I love short and sweet and hot GTO sex. And confused Ray, and sneaky Fraser, and the use of minor characters to push the two of them together. Lucky for me, this has all of the above. Plus, Ray's lines are spot on.

Ray blinked. "You want to double date?"

Looking like he might choke, Fraser replied, "I simply thought that you might also enjoy the exhibit, and Gwen might benefit from a more varied social group. You are, after all, a Chicago native, and might enhance her experience by adding local verisimilitude."

"First, I don't know what that word means but I think I'm insulted. Second, that's a double date. And third, baleen basketry, Fraser?"
