Experimental Hair and other quirks or why I love RayK

Rather than bore all of you with the reasons why I think  RayK is the bee's knees, I'm going to talk a bit about the three fics I feel best define him.

I do love the stories (some of them amongst the classics for this fandom)  by  [livejournal.com profile] cesperanza   and  [livejournal.com profile] bertybertle  and [livejournal.com profile] kelliem and could rec them for days. Still, I thought I would pick other dS writers in order to show the many ways all of us embrace the fandom. Please note all of these are F/K.

Written for Gloriana over at the Due South Sekrit Santa site,[personal profile] j_s_cavalcante 's Desiderata  (NC-17) is an amazing FT fic. Out of all the genres out there, First Times tend to be one of the simplest ones. Not to say that they are easy to write. Just that the premise is fairly basic: Take 'X'  and 'Z' characters, add lots of chemistry and romance and heat. Stir. Aahh, it goes down easy.

In this particular story, there is a fierce heatwave going on in Chicago. RayK takes Fraser over to his apartment to cool off. They get to talking about this and that and RayK, inadvertingly, reveals that he's feeling, well, horny. What follows is less PWP (though the sexin' is incandescent) and more of the sweet realization two men have about their feelings (sexual and romantic) for each other. The RayK we see here is one who shows us so much about what he feels for Benton even in light of his earlier talk about women.

How can you not love a fic with the following excerpt:

Fraser reached a hand over like he was going to touch Ray, but then he didn't. "You spoke of certain...physical needs," Fraser said.

And that's when it hit Ray what Fraser was getting at. Hit him like a sucker-punch, making him gasp almost as hard. He went hot all over, just like that; the a/c was never going to catch up.

Ordinary Days (R) by [livejournal.com profile] busaikko is the type of fic I wouldn't usually read. As a fan of dS, I embrace its magical realistic, loopier aspects with glee. This fic give us a truly broken Fraser and a RayK who faces up to the new reality with equal parts love and snark.

Told from RayK's POV, what makes this story such an amazing one to me is that,  for every sweet moment (Fraser and RayK at ease with each other while they prepare dinner), there is an equally sour one (RayK reading to Fraser, who due his ordeal, is left unable to, gulp, read anymore.)

An excerpt:

He'd thought being made dumb, poor, and queer was some divine joke that he was the punchline to. But now he realises that all those things, the dumb-poor-queer mix of him, they'd all led him to be the one here, tonight, with Benton Fraser. Take away any of that and he might be too smart to have hope, too used to luxury to make sacrifices, too scared to love Fraser the way he does.

and there is something about that quote that is so RayK as to make my eyes water whenever I read it again (especially given the context in the story. Seriously, I wept like a bebeh the first time I read this. And I can't say I regret it.) This is a dark journey, especially for RayK who is, by nature, perhaps the (emotionally) needier out of the F/K pairing. Hope lingers though and that is what makes it perfect.

Bizarrely Perfect
by[livejournal.com profile] torakowalski is yet another twist into the post-COtW fic. This is "I'll try anything" RayK as a 'selective transvestite' . Granted, drag is a quiet fic kink of mine, especially when it is placed within the framework of the everyday. RayK has always struck me as being very "and what?", i.e. filled with snarky attitude. Reading this very short fic, I was utterly charmed by the idea of drag!RayK.

Fraser understood that sometimes – not everyday, but sometimes – Ray needed to do this to feel at peace in his body. Ray knew Fraser understood, but a lifetime of being told it was wrong still got to him sometimes. He finished screwing the lid back on the mascara and was just about to stand up when he felt two big, broad hands, still warm from the shower, settle on him, one per shoulder.

Ray put his hands on top of Fraser’s and smiled at their reflection.

“You’re beautiful.” Fraser said, bending down and kissing his nose.

“I…” Ray stopped himself from offering any explanation. He knew he didn’t need to. “Thank you.” He said instead.

I need a reminder of what I'm doing

[livejournal.com profile] heresluck made a vid, In The Mirror, which is kind of my touchstone Ray Kowalski vid. I mean, not that others aren't completely awesome, but there's something that really gets me about this one. The repetitive bass line that's broken regularly, like Ray is moving, moving, moving, then stopping to check. And to me it's all about that line, "You ever feel like you don't know who you are? Like if you weren't around somebody, or that someone wasn't around you, then you wouldn't be you, or at least not the you that you think. You ever think like that?" Fraser is Ray's mirror.

How I learned to stop worrying and love the Vecchio

Back when I got into this fandom, fic first, it was all Kowalski all the time. The trail of recs I followed led me through stories where Vecchio simply wasn't there, and some where one might wish he wasn't. Then one day, someone explained Ray Vecchio to me in a way that I could understand and love.

In Kowalski is Bleeding by [livejournal.com profile] cesperanza I discovered that Ray Vecchio was alive, vibrant, likeable. Loveable, even. Of course he loved the GTO - he appreciates classic cars. And he loved Fraser, would just drop everything to help him. Thanks, Speranza, for starting my education.

Then [livejournal.com profile] aeyre showed me that Vecchio was just right for my boy Kowalski in You Get What You Need, and I was suddenly a Ray/Ray convert. Boys bruised by Canada and Vegas, but not broken; able to somehow strangely fit together, to find love. Not the grand romance each of them chased during the show, but an "older and wiser" kind of love, no less intense for it's pragmatism.

I had to rethink my original premise that Vecchio was straight. If he could be in love with Kowalski, why not Fraser? "Well, hell!" I said to [livejournal.com profile] china_shop. "Maybe Vecchio is a drag queen every Saturday night." And she wrote me Gloria (the alias that you've been living under) to prove it.

And in the end where can I go but to wingfic? My gift from [livejournal.com profile] llassah was the beautiful, dreamlike Fledgling, where Ray gets wings and learns to use them. Ray Vecchio, you crawled into my heart and head in surprising ways, but I'm so glad I got to know you.

Week Three - Character Recs: Ray Kowalski

It's Week 3 of our celebration of the dS characters, which means that it's time to rec your favourite Kowalski stories (or vids!) Het, gen, slash and crackfic recs are welcome. As is picspam. *cough* Personal essays on how you came to fall for the skinny guy in the GTO would be great, as is meta or episode recs. (As it is for the other characters or our other challenges: your recs for this comm don't necessarily need to be stories, as long as you're reccing some aspect of due South).

In the last week of March (beginning on Tuesday, March 24th) we'll have an amnesty week, where you can discuss any of the three dS leads in whatever form you choose. So if your favourite Fraser fic didn't get recc'd, or you wanted to include a couple more odes to Vecchio, or you have more to say about Kowalski, make sure you mark that date on your calendar.

For now, let's talk Ray Kowalski!

Kind of the delayed version of an insta-rec

By which I mean that I was pottering around in the depths of my del.ici.ous, not doing much in particular, when I came across this story (one of the Team Whimsy entries from this year's ds_match) and went yes! This! With the funny and the characterisation and the funny and the being him and the AWESOME! (also in this category are *points down* the previous recs, which other people got the joy of going all handwavey about, so, y'know, I'm just going to second people reading those. Loudly)

Title: Shot to the Heart
Author: [livejournal.com profile] elementalv (Tara Keezer)
Rating: PG-13
Length: 5.600 words
Why I'm reccing this: uh, see the illiterate keyboard mashing with caps up there? Pretty much that, times really quite a lot. Yes, this story is humourous and whimsical, but it's also a truly marvellous picture of RayV looking at the wrold around him and maybe realising that letting some things happen may be scary, but they also have the potential to be really really good.

Shot to the Heart

Ray Vecchio: Made Of Awesome

Vecchio! *adores* I could talk forever about all the things I adore him for, but I think [livejournal.com profile] belmanoir's list pretty much covers it. So I'll just give that a big WORD, and do a picspam instead:

Every man should have some je ne sais quoi. *nods* )

Ahem. Right. Recs!

Title: Dysmas
Author: [livejournal.com profile] troyswann
Pairing: Gen (Vecchio, Fraser)
Rating: PGish
Length: ~4,600 words
Why I'm reccing this fic: This fic took my heart, beat it up and then left it weeping in a snow bank. And yet, I completely adore it anyway. The fic takes a sharp turn into AUland towards the end of Victoria's Secret, and features just spot-on characterization of Vecchio. His heart and his loyalty are the things I love most about Vecchio, and this fic is a shining example of both.

Brief excerpt. )

Dysmas

Title: Little Ray
Author: [livejournal.com profile] mondschein1
Pairing: Gen (Vegas!Vecchio)
Rating: PG-13?
Length: ~2,600 words
Why I'm reccing this fic: Oh, Vecchio! *sniffles* I love fics that deal with Vecchio's time in Vegas and this was one of the first ones I read that dealt with it in a serious way. I love the way this takes the Ray we all know and love and forces him to be The Bookman while still being Ray. Also, the formatting is a stroke of genius.

Brief excerpt. )

Little Ray

And now, after all that angst... some porn:

Title: Boys Like Me / Girls Like You
Author: [livejournal.com profile] catwalksalone
Pairing: Vecchio/Kowalski
Rating: NC-17
Length: ~1,700 words each
Why I'm reccing this fic: For reasons that don't need exploring at this juncture, Kowalski has been turned into a girl. And Vecchio? Poor Vecchio is trying so hard to be respectful and chivalrous, but it's really hard when girl!Kowalski is always there and horny and propositioning him.

Brief excerpt. )

Boys Like Me, and the sequel Girls Like You

It's his je ne sais quoi.

I adore Vecchio. In [livejournal.com profile] catwalksalone's fic "Trample Down Barbed Wire," there's a line, "Ray's heart does the skip, hop, jump thing he's taken to thinking of as his Vecchio-murmur." Yep, I've got one of those. But trying to explain why in any kind of comprehensive way would involve me making you watch the entirety of Seasons 1 and 2 and CotW1, and then every time Vecchio has a line, I would say "See? Did you see that right there? THAT." Because the man never did anything I didn't love. Even when he's being a complete asshole (which doesn't happen OFTEN but does happen), it feels real and believable and fucked-up and I love it. So I'm just going to make a random list of stuff I love about him.

I've got a thousand reasons, and each one is enough. )

As for recs...nearly every due South fic I have bookmarked has Vecchio in it. Choosing three that somehow encapsulated my love for him would be impossible. So I'm just going to rec one. Please, please read it:

Title: Faster than Sound
Author: [livejournal.com profile] troyswann
Pairing: gen (Fraser+Vecchio, Bob)
Rating: G? PG?
Length: 454 words
Why I'm reccing this fic: Set just after Victoria's Secret. This fic is incredibly short and Vecchio doesn't even have a speaking part, and yet everything I love about him, and about his capacity for love, and about his and Fraser's relationship, is right there.

Faster than Sound

Week Two - Character Recs: Ray Vecchio

We're entering Week 2 of the Character Recs challenge, and we'd like to open things up for a love-in, Ray Vecchio style.

So tell us why you think that a certain exuberant Italian is groovy. Share your love for Vecchio in the form of story recommendations, picspam, mini-essays, or personal tales about how you first fell for the guy with the pretty eyes, long neck and adorable nose. (What? Like Vecchio himself, I have a certain fondness for that particular protuberance).

You have until next Tuesday! Get your recs in while they're hot!
