Hi! I'm Primrose, and I'll be this month's guest reccer for the next three weeks. This month I'm going to rec character studies from various media. Knowing me, there'll be a whole passel of Frasercentric stuff. Erm.
Today's subject: Vids!
Some of these will be familiar to long-time fen, but because of the influx (yay!) of new people I don't feel redundant at all in reccing them here.
Title: Out Here
Vidder:
heresluck
Music: Peter Mulvey - Out Here (lyrics)
Pairing: F/K
Production history: here (great insight into the vidding process)
Video Commentary: here (pieces of the actual video as well as clips of drafts, with voice-over commentary. It's made of a substance way greater than awesome). I'd watch it AFTER you watch the vid itself.
Why I'm Reccing this Vid: First and foremost, it's a thoughtful look into Fraser's sense of isolation in a city full of people. It's also about his relationship with Ray specifically, and how they scrape and grate at each other before Fraser figures out how to listen to his heart instead of his fears and go forward. The song is perfect, and I love how
heresluck moves chunks of it around to fit the clips (if you have a chance to hear the full song, do it--it's lovely). There's one clip in the middle of the vid (which I won't spoil, you'll have to find it yourself) that changes the entire tone from angsty to hopeful--the switch is palpable. She also does these wonderful jump-cuts that add an artistic and professional touch to the clips.
As far as I can see, there's nowhere to watch it online. It used to be at imeem, but since imeem was bought by MySpace, everything's weird over there. If anyone knows of anywhere it's uploaded, let me know and I'll add it to the info. ETA: There's a Video Commentary here at BAM video, but I still haven't found an online of the unnarrated version.
Download here. (DivX.avi, 38.4 MB)
Title: Needful
Vidder:
fenlings
Music: Natalie Merchant - My Skin (lyrics)
Pairing: Various
Why I'm Reccing this Vid:. This is one of the vids that helped cement my love for dS as a newbie. It's longer than average, angsty and haunting and lovely. Basically its a story of Fraser's life, told in a loop--at the end of the vid, we (and Fraser) wind up where we started, and in-between we get glimpses of friends and lovers and events that have helped to shape him. The theme of isolation and other-ness are present here, but the feeling is darker and angstier than in the previous rec. One of the many things I love about this vid is how seamlessly the clips fit the music as well as the lyrics. And the lyrics are a perfect fit--there are places in this that make my heart melt. Fraser's emotions are caught really well here.
As far as I know
fenlings has never uploaded this for watching online.

Title: Let the River Run (original and revised versions)
Vidder: Mary S. Van Deusen (With C. Parnes)
Music: Carly Simon - Let the River Run (lyrics)
Pairing: None
Why I'm Reccing this Vid: I simply love this vid, maybe because it shows everything I love about Fraser--his optimism, his loyalty to his friends, his faith in people, his championing of the underdog (sometimes literally!). Angsty? Not even close. The feeling of this vid is the polar opposite of angst. It's choc-full of triumph and joy and hope. I defy anyone to watch it even once and not feel a little better about life. It's happy-making and hopeful and gah. Just lovely. A large portion of the clips are from One Good Man, which is one of my very favourite eps, ever.
This is a two-for-the-price-of-one rec, because there are two versions of the vid. The first has no RayK clips because Mary made the vid before the RayK clips aired. I can't find the page where she talks about both versions, but I remember her saying that she likes the original one best. I agree with her-- The RayK clips take away slightly from both the continuity and the framing of the original vid; the original is another loop-type format and the addition of the extra clips sort of cancels that. Having said that, watch both clips, because a. the second is well worth watching and has other new clips that don't feel forced, and b. you might not agree with me. ;)
Both are remastered from vids originally made on analog equipment from VHS clips, so the picture quality isn't perfect. Do NOT let this sway you, however because they're excellent vids. They are not available to watch online.
Download both versions here. Original is mp4, 217 mb. The re-edited version is mp4, 27 mb (both playable on VLC). Mary rotates which of her vids she makes available, so get them now while the getting's good.
Title: Superman's Song
Vidder:
lipstickcat
Music: Crash Test Dummies - Superman's Song (lyrics)
Pairing: None
Why I'm Reccing this Vid: This is a thoughtful, laid-back vid about Turnbull, and Fraser, and hero worship. I love the contrast between Turnbull soldiering on at the Consulate and Fraser saving lives and doing all sorts of Brave and Noble Acts--Turnbull babysitting, figuratively and literally, while Fraser makes the world safer for kids to be tucked in at night.
lipstickcat says that she had planned to make a Turnbull vid but that it turned into something else. I really love what it became. The very last clip is utterly perfect, craftwise, music-to-clipwise, and aesthetically. *happysigh*
I couldn't find a working download link for this vid. Watch it online here at YouTube.
Title: You Can Call Me
Vidder:
sdwolfpup
Music: Paul Simon - You Can Call Me Al (lyrics)
Pairing: None
Why I'm Reccing this Vid: I was almost hesitant to rec this because anyone who's been in fandom more than, oh, ten minutes has probably seen it. I decided to add it to the recs because of the influx of people brand-new to fandom, and also because I couldn't NOT rec it--this vid may well be my very favourite vid ever. It's a study of each of the main characters, but it's more than that: it's a giant video love letter to dS as a show and as a fandom. It's also a really great intro to the characters for people new to them. The vidder's use of metaphor in the placement of clip-to-lyrics borders on genius, and I'm really, really not exaggerating. Parts made me laugh, parts made me cry. It's meant to be happy-making, and it succeeds in spades. I could go on and on about how much I love this vid. I love this vid so much I made an icon based on it. *points* If you want to read my (more detailed) original response to it, the comment is here (although I'd read it after you watch so you won't be spoiled)
Download here (DivX .avi, 45 mb)
Watch on BAM video here
I have GOT to stop myself here. There are a bazillion more vids that should be recced, but I'm out of time and hey, there's a character limit for posts.
I'm not ruling out reccing more vids later on, so stay tuned.
