Title: Desiderata
Author: J S Cavalcante (

Pairing: Fraser/Kowalski
Rating: NC-17
Length: ~14,500 words
Why I'm reccing this fic: It was an awesome Seekrit Santa season! There were three fics, in particular, that hit me right in the kink.
First, I should not have been surprised that JS Cavalcante was the author of one of my favorites, as her fic last year was as well. This year, she she used one of my favorite storytelling devices--the unreliable narrator. Ray is our POV character. On a hot, humid night he has brought Fraser home to encourage him to cool off and relax. Fraser pinpoints Ray's own heat-exacerbated frustrations as lack of romantic companionship, but Ray is so immersed in his view of himself as missing a woman that he can't see what we so clearly do through Ray's blinkered eyes--Fraser offering himself. Over the course of the evening and early morning Ray recognizes the loyalty and need and love they have between them, while still being frustratingly slow on the uptake. It makes his eventual tumble extraordinarily sweet. JS is so good at not rushing the story, and stretches out both the tension and resolution for a supremely satisfying experience.

Why I'm reccing this fic: I am a complete sucker for the magical realism of the show, and the best crack!fics following the tradition. Sli's latest has the glee-making good feel of a time-honored trope, like genderswitch or bodyswap or sex pollen, while being utterly unique: A head injury leaves Fraser with the inability to speak any words but those last spoken in his hearing. Sli uses Fraser's condition for some wonderful character exposition, like Fraser's frustration with not being able to communicate, and the depth of knowledge of Greek mythology in the 2-7 bullpen, and Fraser and Ray's ability read each other's faces, and Ray's wonderfully thoughtful "gift" to Fraser so that he can have a chance to sound like himself for a while. It's a delightful story all the way through, and leaves me in my happy place.

Why I'm reccing this fic: This story hits me in both a narrative and a literal kink. I love a story in which a character has a fetish, and the reader gets pulled into his yearning. And in this case, Ray's fetish is men in makeup, so yes, please! The story starts with Ray rummaging through Fraser's apartment before his assignment, and discovering Fraser's makeup bag. The jolt he gets from it never completely goes away, and eventually he starts escalating his wordless provocation of Fraser. Both so stubbornly refuse to actually bring up the topic with each other that when the tension finally boils over, the resulting scene reduces me to nnnnggh. Smoking red hot kink!fic. Yum!
