Title: Something to look forward to
Author: [livejournal.com profile] belmanoir
Pairing:Fraser/Vecchio
Rating: NC-17
Length: 8,450 words
Why I'm reccing this fic: This story starts out with Fraser pouring his heart out to Ray while he thinks Ray is asleep. It's such an odd, Fraser-ish thing to do, and the author lets us see just how messed up the poor guy really is. Vecchio sets out to break down those walls with smarts, humor, and sheer tenacity.

The snarky dialog is a treat, and there's a wonderful sex scene full of awkwardness and hotness, trust and love.

Author: to be revealed
Pairing: Fraser/Kowalski (pre-slash)
Rating: PG
Length: 6,200 words
Why I'm reccing this fic: I was going to make my next rec something from the first half of the Match, but I decided to see what was up tonight first. And oh, I knew before I'd even clicked that this was going to have to be my next rec, because something I've been hoping to see almost as long as I've been paying attention to the Due South fandom had finally come to pass: Ray Kowalski had somehow been turned into a dog. It really only gets better from there, as the excerpt shows.

Author: [livejournal.com profile] slidrella
Pairing: Fraser/Vecchio

Length: 6,000 words
Why I'm reccing this fic:

What if Fraser and RayV have always been girls? They are themselves, Ray and Fraser, and yet they are different. The character voices are spot on, especially Fraser's.

There are some interesting themes about gender, but it never becomes less of a story. It's subtle and lovely and has a wonderful Fraser & RayK friendship.

Truly I was blown away by it.

Why I'm reccing this fic:

An interesting format that works, that isn't just a fancy but supports the story. It all flows together beautifully.
I love the character voices here, especially Fraser's, and the humor. They know each other. It has a slightly snarky Fraser and an intelligent and competent RayK, which I love.

Title: First One Thing, Then the Otter
Author: to be revealed
Pairing: Fraser/Kowalski
Rating: PG-13
Length: 13,100 words
Why I'm reccing this fic: Reason #1: I ♥ puns. They are simultaneously horrible and awesome, and this one is right in the title. Reason #2: It's from Team Whimsy. Reality, I love you, I do! But Whimsy is the staple in my fiction diet, like rice versus frogs' legs. I had to side with them, at least this time. Reason #3: So obviously, this being a Team Whimsy fic, there's gotta be weirdness, right? Right. Except instead of the usual stuff--spirits, magic, aliens, etc.--we get something downright silly. I won't ruin the surprise, but I personally loved it. And finally, Reason #4: While all the otter stuff is going down, there's still a whole official case going on that's completely unrelated. That's another thing I like--since I've been watching the first two seasons of Due South, I've realized that I love the "cops doing their job" aspect of the show--and the fanfic--as much as I love the Fish Out of Water stuff and S. R. Kowalski in: Fraser's Big Gay Love Story: the Series.

...That last one got a little long. On to the excerpt and then to the story!

Why I'm reccing this fic:

I love outsider!pov, I love Welsh and I love slice-of-life stories. This has it all. Great character voices, for all of them, but especially for Welsh, and wonderful character moments. There's humor, and warmth and Frannie, a grown-up Frannie.

Title: I Am a Man Upon the Land
Author: to be revealed
Pairing: Fraser/Kowalski
Rating: PG-13
Length: 13,000 words
Why I'm reccing this fic:

There are many ways a story can impress me. This one does it at first glance through its language. It has enough poetry to be lyrical and enough prose to not be flowery. It flows and ebbs, and I was so captivated I didn't know I was reading. I slipped into Fraser's head.
Fraser is so very much himself. His longing and need is clearly visible without becoming overbearing, I could practically taste it. I love how he views Ray, how we see him through Fraser's eyes.

But then there is the story itself, the plot. Interesting take on an old theme, with the touch of due South to make it specific, and not just generic. I loved its pacing and the slow and steady build-up. And I loved how Fraser and Ray's story was interwoven with the story of the selky.

Title: Notes on the Impossibility of Nirvana
Author: to be revealed
Pairing: Fraser/Vecchio
Rating: PG-13
Length: 3,700 words
Why I'm reccing this fic:

This fic has one disadvantage, imho: Being posted as contribution of Team Whimsey it lets the reader automatically assume that Fraser's powers are real. It is however entirely possible that it might be only in his head. It has a fascinating ambiguity, and Fraser here seems not the most reliable narrator.

Whatever the case, this story is frightfully haunting and it chilled me to the bone. Poor, poor Fraser, denying himself the humanity and joy of desire to not put others in danger, strangling himself and repressing everything into duty.
And what might happen if Fraser weren't Fraser, if his morals were less than they are?

Thankfully RayV's snark and humor safe this story from stumbling into an angst fest. I love how RayV's voice sets a counterpoint in feeling and theme to Fraser's.

I love the idea, and I love the execution, and while it stands on its own I'd love the see more of this.

Title: Lift
Author: to be revealed
Pairing: Kowalski/Vecchio, Fraser/Kowalski/Vecchio
Rating: R
Length: 6,200 words
Why I'm reccing this fic:

Team Reality opened the game with an intriguing, gritty and plotty story. I enjoyed reading
The Harder They Fall, a lot. It has great character voices and I felt for both of them. I loved how it felt real with real life problems. It's well worth your time. I know I'm going to re-visit it.

So, I can see you scratching your head, why do I rec Lift? Because I fell head over heels in love with it. I love their voices. I love RayV, for me the mile stone of characterization. I can buy a lot of RayKs and Frasers, but RayV is special. This is so an intriguing view on him, I want to know more.

And I love the rest of the story too. The plot, the theme, the humor and the angst. It's all seamlessly weaved together into one beautiful story. I've already read it twice and I know I'm going to re-read it, and re-read it...

Title: The Harder They Fall
Author: Member of Team Reality
Pairing:Fraser/Kowalski
Rating:NC-17
Length:22,500
Why I'm reccing this fic: For many reasons
1. It is beautifully written in a way that makes you feel every moment of it. The language is just gorgeous.
2. One of my favorite types of fic is hurt/comfort where Fraser is hurt, and this is a wonderful example of that.
3. It was written for Team Reality, and it absolutely celebrates reality. Reality is scary and messy and imperfect. Ray and Fraser are all of these things, and that is what makes them so beautiful. They get hurt, they make mistakes, there is distance and anger and regret. But most importantly there is love. And there is nothing better than love that can survive reality. I want this to be there future pain and imperfection and all.
4. It's also really funny in places.

Pairing: Fraser/RayK
Rating: R
Length: approx 10,500 words
Why I'm reccing this fic: It still makes me weep and sigh on the fourth reading!

It's an established-relationship plotty casefic, with a hat-tip to canon, where our boys are real adults (not teenagers with wrinkles). The massage is truly epic, and well-deserved, since the story deals with a serial rapist (but includes no details of the crimes). The sex is stimulating and realistic and thrilling.

Author: Tara Keezer/[livejournal.com profile] elementalv
Pairing: F/K
Rating: PG-13
Length: ~6000 words
Why I'm reccing this fic: Okay, it's a crack AU loosely based on George of the Jungle. The Muldoon case, except Fraser never came to Chicago, Bob's still alive, Kowalski and Vecchio have been working together for a while, and solemnity is pretty much nonexistent. Read now for cozy ice houses, bodacious Canadian babes, and Ray Kowalski literally getting swept off his feet.

Why I'm reccing this fic: Apparently submarines are a necessary catalyst for some of the changes in Ray and Fraser's relationship. In this fic set during the Quest, the second sub didn't quite do its job, so the universe throws a third at them--this time with bonus sea monsters!

Why I'm reccing this fic: I have a huge weakness for the Last to Know scenario. Why I'm reccing this fic: because it's got the Mario Brothers. Heh. And because I love seeing Fraser forced to give up control. Why I'm reccing this fic: Because control pushes my buttons and this one has Fraser taking control away from Ray and giving him the ride of his life. A little bit of domination, a little bit of bondage, a little bit of role-playing and I'm gonna be in my bunk for a long while. This is one of the first fics I'd run across in the fandom and still one of my favorites.

Rating: NC17
Length: 17K+
Why I'm reccing this fic: because this is the most realistic take on the Fraser/RayK fetish dynamic that I've ever seen. Here is Fraser trying to explore his sexual boundaries while Ray watches over him, supporting him in the only way he knows how. And finding himself lost at the thought of Fraser with someone else. Perfectly balanced between the two possibilities and really, really hot, this is one of my desert-island fics.

Title: Missing Pieces
Author: [livejournal.com profile] aukestrel
Pairing: Fraser/Smithbauer
Rating: NC-17
Length: 25 pages in pdf format
Why I'm reccing this fic: This is backstory for the (completely and totally awesome) AU "Strange Loops", but it can be read separately, too. I don't know why this pushes my buttons so hard--it's not the hockey thing, because despite being Swedish, I have never watched a hockey game in my life (although between this and Hawks and Hands, my mind firmly associates hockey with gay sex). I think it's that this relationship shows Fraser in a different light compared to his relationship with the Rays. It's not true love so much as buddy-sex, but there's still a trust between them, because they were childhood friends and know each other so well. And my GOD, the sex is hot.

Title: Come With Me
Author: [livejournal.com profile] zabira
Pairing: Fraser/Victoria
Rating: PG-13
Length: about 10.000 words
Why I'm reccing this fic: This is a new story, so you've probably seen it announced, but it affected me so much that I just want to make sure as many people as possible read it. [livejournal.com profile] zabira shows Victoria to be a complex and human character, with a backstory that explains so much about her. It doesn't redeem her completely--she still does what she does--but it makes me heart ache not just for Fraser, but for her too. They are both so young when they first meet, and seen through Victoria's eyes, Fraser just kind of--shines through. He's straight and true and tries so hard, and sees and respects her a way that noone else has before, and he does what he has to do, but he just doesn't see what his actions are doing to her. It made me cry.

Title: Passion
Author: [livejournal.com profile] cesperanza
Pairing: Fraser/Kowalski
Rating: NC-17
Length: 188K
Why I'm reccing this fic: This is Fraser's history, and Fraser's romantic history. It's complex and confused, bare and yet strangely rich, sad. Even the other players, Fraser's father and grandparents, Quin, Eric, others, are both surprisingly complex and incredibly removed. If it weren't for the fact that we know Ray Kowalski is waiting there in Fraser's future this would be a bleak read indeed. And yet Speranza fills the emptiness with incredibly rich detail that we're sure Fraser has etched into his memory. There are warnings for character death and for hurt/comfort, although Speranza assures us of a 'very happy, romantic ending."

Title: Sole
Author: Anagi
Pairing: Fraser/Kowalski
Rating: NC-17
Length: ~1,800 words
Why I'm reccing this fic: This is the first fic I think of when the word "fetish" is mentioned, a classic leather boot kink. The taste of the polish, the smell of Fraser inside--it all drives us Ray completely around the bend, and Fraser ends up taking full advantage. Guh!

Title: Handcuffs
Author: Aerye ([livejournal.com profile] aerye)
Pairing: Fraser/Kowalski
Rating: NC-17
Length: 635 words
Why I'm reccing this fic: Short and hot like burning. This fic takes place in the single moment when Fraser puts the cuffs on Ray in Asylum, though there's an intriguing use of future tense in the story structure. Handcuffs as a fetish object have been done a million times, but rarely so viscerally and so well.

Title: Freaks
Author: Arrow ([livejournal.com profile] arrow00)
Pairing: Fraser/Kowalski
Rating: R
Length: 3,039 words
Why I'm reccing this fic: The previous two (and many) fetish stories are mainly PWPs. (And I do love a good PWP!) This story is different in that it's more of a character study. The "perfect" Mountie knows himself to be a freak, more so than anyone realizes. But Ray's acceptance of his own freakishness, and unmistakable appreciation of Fraser's, gives Fraser the kind of freedom and belonging he's never known. Not to say that there isn't some scorching Ray-loves-the-crossdressing sex, because there's that here, too.

Title: The Small Indian Mongoose Is Not Immune to the Cobra's Venom
Author: Brigantine ([livejournal.com profile] brigantine1)
Pairing: Kowalski/OC, Fraser/Kowalski
Rating: NC-17
Length: ~5,400 words
Why I'm reccing this fic: Beautiful Ray backstory. Woven in between clips of another run-in between our guys and Warfield are snippets of Ray's past, as he transformed himself from a skinny, pants-wetting, geeky Polish kid to someone who knew how to take a punch, then someone who knew how to throw a punch--all in the service of standing up for himself and other people who didn't deserve to get bullied. It's all the bits that went between the bank robbery and Ray's decision to become a cop. And it makes me flail with love for him. (As I do.) Rikki-tikki-tavi, indeed.

Title: Home Schooling
Author: Luzula ([livejournal.com profile] luzula)
Pairing: Gen
Rating: G
Length: ~1,200 words
Why I'm reccing this fic: And now Fraser's childhood--a scene of one afternoon in Ben's boyhood. In a few short paragraphs, Luzula clearly outlines the influences that made Fraser the adult that he was: his grandmother's emotional reserve, intellectual interest and snippiness; his grandfather's discomfort with conflict; his father's inability to connect, or even see him; and his absent mother's assertiveness, coming to the fore in his personality. A truly outstanding character sketch.

Author: Speranza ([livejournal.com profile] cesperanza)
Pairing: Fraser/Kowalski, Kowalski/Stella, Kowalski/OC, Fraser/OC
Rating: NC-17
Length: ~21,750 words
Why I'm reccing this fic: And what would a recs list be without Speranza? Here is her tour de force backstory piece. Ray, distraught over Stella dating other men, looks back on their history, from childhood friendship through the divorce. Once he pulls his head out of his own grief, he realizes he knows nothing about Fraser's history, and applies his detective skills to discovering things about his partner he had no idea about (including an even angstier piece of personal history than we've ever seen). Only after they share their pains can they move on from the past.

Title: The Teeth of the Hydra
Author: [livejournal.com profile] resonant8
Pairing: F/K
Rating: NC-17
Length: 140K
Why I'm reccing this fic: I read this story early on in my exploration of Due South fic, and it completely imprinted as Ray Kowalski's backstory. Resonant has an amazing ability to write people interacting in such a real and visceral way, and in this case she's written complimentary narratives weaving together Ray and Stella, and Ray and Fraser. The story is written in alternating timelines: Fraser and Ray are working a case which for Ray resonates strongly with his past and causes him to both re-evaluate that past and to reassess his relationships with, well everyone, but with Stella and Fraser most of all. It was really hard to select an excerpt, as each section is loaded with significance. This is probably one of my desert island fics.
