ext_3123: Ray Kowalski, slightly forlorn (Whee! Singing in the Rain)

So much for the year-in-review -- the 2009 smut challenge is over!

Now it's time for the It's all about You challenge -- this week, we're collecting self-recs. So which of your own creations would you like to rec? Will it be one that came easily or one that you had to struggle with? One of each? It could be something you just forgot to post more widely or something you kinda liked and feel proud of, or that reveals stuff about you or your view of the characters, one that best expresses what you were trying to say, a creation you learned something from or surprised you. Whether your fanwork has been woefully overlooked or justly admired, there's someone here who'd love to see it!

Even if you don't write, draw/paint/photoshop, podfic, or vid, we'd still like to hear about your favorite contribution to due South fandom. Have you been someone's beta or cheerleader? Do you unleash plotbunnies on unsuspecting friends and acquaintances? Did you pimp a friend into fandom? Toot your own horn in comments!

OK, I'll go first. I'll do which one came easily and one I had to struggle with. Easy first and that was Up In Smoke (http://talesofakite.ravenshadow.net/ds/smoke.htm). It was written way back in 2003 for the kaleidoscope challenge at [livejournal.com profile] ds_flashfiction. Once the idea hit, it really took off. I couldn't type as fast as RayK and Fraser were talking to me. *g*

On the other hand, These Days (http://talesofakite.ravenshadow.net/ds/these_days.htm), oh man! *shakes head* I probably started it in 2003, but I finally got it together and finished for the 2005 Due South Seekrit Santa. That's my problem with longer forms, if I start without a clear destination, by that I mean, the whole story plotted in my head, I get lost and the story languishes on my hard drive. Every great once in a while, I'll pull the rest of the story out, as in this case, but mostly they die a long, lingering death.

I still think that Con Job (http://keerawa.livejournal.com/32834.html) is the best thing I've written. Undercover Ray, unreliable narrator - what's not to love?

One of the first due South pieces I wrote, and I believe the first porn, was Leaving a Mark (http://keerawa.livejournal.com/20340.html) Yes, it's Knife!kink porn. But it's also sweet and uplifting. Do check it out?

The due South story that gave me the hardest time (of the ones I've completed) was definitely Safe House (http://keerawa.livejournal.com/44481.html). That completely external narrator was brutally difficult, and the dark, cynical head-space writing it sent me into was ... ugh. I'm very proud of it, though!

What about the ones you haven't completed?

Well, there are two incomplete fics that have driven me up the wall.

The sequel to Accessory (http://keerawa.livejournal.com/45950.html), in which Ray and Fraser hunt down a serial killer, is unwritable. I know what happens. It's just so bleak that I refuse to invest my life energy to bring it into existance.

The other is my story in which Ray in injured on the Quest, and Fraser brings him to his mother's family to save his life. I've had 3 completely different ideas about what the POINT of that story is. I've written and re-written various scenes. It never quite worked for me. There's something missing. Something wrong. It's not what it needs to be. And then the file disappeared off my hard drive, so if I want to finish the damn thing I have to start from scratch. Argh.

My favorite dS fic I've written is just a wee little ficlet, but it perfectly showcases my sense of humor--which has been called obnoxious and evil. Cleanliness is Next to Godliness (and Raise-Worthiness) (http://community.livejournal.com/ds_flashfiction/500642.html).

I'm also fond of my zombie piece Belle de Jour (http://bluebrocade.livejournal.com/189233.html). It was a challenge to write since it's Thatcher-centric (which I'd never done) and gen and a different genre (horror-ish, whereas I usually stick to humor. I wish I could write porn & angst. And angsty porn!)

Read your zombie fic, and wow, that was certainly angsty. But I liked your Thatcher-POV.

Oof, this was hard. Possibly I am most fond of my werewolf series:

Shifting, which is F/K,
Running, which is Bob/Caroline,
Into the Wild, which is Fraser/Victoria,
Another Way, which is an AU of Into the Wild (yes, that means it's an AU of an AU).

Poetry has always been my forte, and I'm pleased with how
Sensory: Five Poems for Five Senses (http://hyperfocused.livejournal.com/160640.html) came out.

Fic wise, I'm still amused by the gimmick of My Everchanging Moods (http://hyperfocused.livejournal.com/113335.html), which has a special trick to it.

and finally, I really kind of like my DS Hitchhiker's Guide fusion, A Mostly Harmless Lie (http://hyperfocused.livejournal.com/242970.html)
