Welcome to our very first challenge here at ds_recsredux!

What we have for you this week is the New Writers Challenge! We want you to rec fics by (relatively) new writers. Due South is a fandom that's, what, over a decade old? We're talking writers who are pretty new to the fandom. Someone who hasn't been recced a lot, someone who has emerged in the past six months or so, someone who is new to the fandom, or from another established fandom.

One of the very best things about Due South as a fandom is that there is constantly new blood. There are always new writers entering the fandom and giving us amazing fic. With the constant influx of writers, there are always some fics we may have missed along the way, from writers we don't know, and this is your chance to turn the spotlight on them!

So you have from now until midnight Sunday, October 8th, to post your favorite fics from new writers! Remember, three recs per challenge, plus one free insta-rec! See the profile for rules and formatting, and please remember to tag your recs!

Why I'm reccing these fics:

Cat's a Sports Night writer who's recently started writing Due South. These are the first two parts in a trilogy, the third of which is going to be written for vecchiofest, and in these parts, she breaks Ray Kowalski and then starts putting him back together. Her Kowalski voice is brilliant, especially in the second one, and her descriptions are gorgeous. So go, read and enjoy!

Why I'm reccing this fic: I have absolutely no shame about reccing this even though I'm this fic's beta. It's Mistress Ace's first DS fic, and don't let the crossover pairing scare you off. You don't need to know Smallville canon.

Written for the getfraserlaid challenge (details in the Author's summary), this pairing may seem impossible but Mistress Ace lays the groundwork beautifully, gets Fraser laid awesomely, and explains what happened to the Fraser/RayK OTP. It's a little painful, but a lot hopeful.

Why I am reccing this fic:

Besides the fact that this holds great sentimental value as being the fic that converted me to Fraser/Vecchio, there are just so many good things about this story. The beauty of the surrealness of the dream, the Moby Dick references, and the goofy looking smile that the ending puts on your face and keeps there throughout the day. It is an amazing example of what a good author can do to create a mood with a small amount of words.

Why I am reccing this fic:

I really struggled to pick a favorite among all of her stories, because I don't think that I have read a single one that I haven't liked. But in the end, I chose this one because it is the best of them all. This is a crossover with Buffy the Vampire Slayer and is set post-CotW and during season 4 of Buffy. Everytime I re-read this story, it fills me with awe. She absolutely nails all of the voices, especially Spike. It is beautiful, heart-breaking, and humorous. And despite the pairing, (And the amazingly hot sex) this is really a story about Fraser and Ray K and Spike simply offering his own peculiar brand of relationship therapy. It is a story about love, and forgiveness and second chances. And, you know, Spike/Fraser with handcuffs. That is a really nice icing on this already wonderful cake. *g*

Why I'm reccing this fic:

This fic was posted right around the time that con_txt was happening, so some may have missed it, and that is a real shame. Even though Joan isn't a new new writer, as she's been in fandom for a little over a year (I think? she was here before me, anyway), this is a fandom that's been around for ten years, and everything is relative. A new voice is always a good thing, and Joan has an incredibly distinctive, crisp, fresh style that is evocative, stunningly lyrical, and tends to blow me away each time. This fic is no exception. It's what happens after, a little during, and in the beginning. The voices are perfect, and the language is breathless, with no word wasted, no word out of tune.

Why I'm reccing this fic: This was an entry in stop_drop_porn a few months back, and I was just completely bowled over by it. It packs a huge punch with so few words, and it's one that I reread all the time. This is everything a good PWP should be: ridiculous hot, completely in-character, and absolutely gorgeously written. Dangerous Fraser, desperate-to-be-fucked Ray...YUM.
