So around midnight last night, when I was looking over this list to finalize it, I realized what my major problem was with my posting scheme - THERE IS NOTHING REALLY INTELLIGENT THAT I CAN SAY ABOUT PWPS! Note that I am not saying that there is nothing intelligent to be said about the subject of PWPs, because there truly is! A talented author can use sex as a very powerful tool for development of both character and relationship. Unfortunately, my brain tends to dissolve into a puddle of goo when reading most well written, well characterized sex. So in place of any sort of thoughtful commentary, I am offering excerpts from these stories instead. Because I am certain that all of these are very well characterized stories that say much about Fraser, Kowalski, Vecchio and their relationships. I just didn't notice because my brain was too busy being short circuited. *g*

This way for sex! )

Annnnd that's all folks! Thank you kindly for your wonderfully enthusiastic response and thanks to our wonderful mods. I know I had fun!

*waves* Hi, I am [livejournal.com profile] sansets and I will be your guest reccer for the week! There are many things about this fandom that I love, but there are very few that will get me as wildly enthusiastic as my OT3 - Fraser/Kowalski/Vecchio. Today's post is going to focus on a celebration of how many different ways there are to get these three stubborn guys into a relationship.

For your reading pleasure - the many routes to Fraser/Kowalski/Vecchio )

And that was that! I will be back later in the week for a post on established F/K/V fics and finishing off my week with everyone's favorite - PWPs! (OK, perhaps not everyone's favorite, but it comes really close to being mine.) In the meantime, feel free to comment with your recs for great first time fics. There are some great stories that I didn't rec because I was going to rec other stories by the same author for my other posts and there are also some great stories that I haven't read yet, so please tell me all about your favorites!

Title: Something Good
Author: [livejournal.com profile] fearless_diva
Pairing: F/K
Rating: R for language
Length: 3,891 words
Why I'm reccing this fic: Okay, I love this story. Fearless Diva takes on one of my favorite kinks, secretly!yearning!Fraser meets clueless!Ray. And then she weaves in magical realism, time travel, future!ghost!Fraser, indoor atmospheric disturbances, a ticking clock and the fuck-or-die device. She uses all of these beautifully to tell a story about friendship and second chances which, with a little judicious use of time travel, can become first chances if one is wise enough to take them.

Title: Standing Vigil
Author: Phenyx_tP
Pairing: F/K preslash
Rating: PG-13
Length: 7350 words

Why I'm reccing this fic: Ghost!Ray can't seem to unglue himself from Fraser's side, and who could blame him? That wouldn't be buddies. An interesting study of Fraser, woobieing his heart out, seen through the non-corporeal eyes of Ray. Plus, there's suspense, intrigue, supportive!Vecchio, dead!Bob, and Ray's parents. A worthwhile read, and suitable for even my namby-pamby romantic sensibilities.

Title: Lipstick Vogue
Author: Brooklinegirl ([livejournal.com profile] brooklinegirl)
Pairing: Fraser/Kowalski
Rating: NC-17
Length: ~2,180 words
Why I'm reccing this fic: Here's how hot the sex in this story is: cross-dressing--eh, I could take it or leave it. But this story lights me on fire. It's Ray's first time wearing a skirt and panties around Fraser, and they discover it's an even bigger kink for Fraser than Ray. I love watching Fraser undone by lust.

Title: Handle with Care
Author: Nos4a2no9 ([livejournal.com profile] nos4a2no9)
Pairing: Fraser/Kowalski
Rating: NC-17
Length: 1,479
Why I'm reccing this fic: Nos does a brilliant job of evoking the sights sounds and sensations of a hot day in a cheap motel room. But even hotter than the muggy Chicago summer day is the sweaty sex Fraser talks Ray into (again). Irresistible. Make sure your A/C is working before reading this one!

Title: Decalcification
Author: Slidellra ([livejournal.com profile] slidellra)
Pairing: Fraser/Kowalski
Rating: NC-17
Length: 1,814 words
Why I'm reccing this fic: Here is a beautifully drawn character portrait, with word choices that lend a touch of the poetic to the prose. It's domestic Fraser and Ray, home from a frustrating day at work, knowing each other and getting each other so perfectly well. The medium of their understanding? Really, fantastically hot sex.

Title: The Sweet Hereafter
Author: China Shop ([livejournal.com profile] china_shop)
Pairing: Fraser/Kowalski
Rating: R
Length: 44,885 words
Why I'm reccing this fic: With a water pollution case, Native American rights being trampled, Consulate party planning, rambling Bob stories and Fraser accidentally bodyswitched with his father's ghost, this could be a canon episode! (Okay, maybe the Fraser/Ray revelations and car sex, not so much, but the subtext would be on the screen, right?) It's fascinating watching Fraser's body with Bob's personality--or frustrating, if you're Ray or Dief. Classic bodyswap with a twist.

Title: Ray Woke Up FAIRY!
Author: Moonloon ([livejournal.com profile] maryavatar)
Pairing: Fraser/Kowalski
Rating: R
Length: 541
Why I'm reccing this fic: A short ficlet of delightful hilariousness: Ray discovers sleeping with Fraser has a side effect. I'm quite fond of this explanation for Fraser's generous Canadian nature. ;-)

Title: Dead Men Don't Throw Rice
Author: Alex ([livejournal.com profile] alex51324)
Pairing: Fraser/Kowalski
Rating: PG
Length: 1,762 words
Why I'm reccing this fic: One of Due South's longest-running mumbojumbo themes is the afterlife cabin in the closet. So when Fraser and Ray decide to make it official, and gay marriage isn't legal in Chicago ... Wonderful, wonderful use of ghosts. And Alex, as usual, has written all the characters' voices note-perfect. Schmoop alert (which is a plus, in my book)!

Er, hi. *waves* I've been lurking in the fandom for almost a year now and this is me finally getting up the nerve to contribute something a little more solid than the occasional quick link: three quick links with exposition! It took me a bit to pick out three fics to rec for the Mumbojumbo Jujitsu challenge, since apparently that sort of thing takes up a solid quarter of my 200+ DS bookmarks, but I managed it at last so here's a handful of short-but-sweets.

Title:In the Sewers He Lies Dreaming
Author: [livejournal.com profile] spuffyduds
Pairing: Gen: Fraser, Ray Vecchio
Rating: R for language and ANCIENT EVIL
Length: around 2100 words
Why I'm reccing this fic: In a crossover with anything by H. P. Lovecraft, there are basically two options. You can shoot for a creeping horror á la the original, or you can go in the exact opposite direction and head for Crack City. This is a case of the latter, with a little D&D thrown in for garnish. I don't know about you, but to me that sounds like a recipe for success.

Title: Here at the end of all things
Author: [livejournal.com profile] shihadchick
Pairing: F/K
Rating: PG
Length: around 1700 words
Why I'm reccing this fic: This was written for [livejournal.com profile] ds_flashfiction's Apocalypse challenge a couple of years ago, and when I went on my new fandom fic binge last year it had so much atypical hope that I think it's the only one I bookmarked right away. If you haven't read it before, see if you can guess which religion's version of the end of the world is happening before the final author's note.

Title: Six is the Loneliest Number
Author: [livejournal.com profile] lordessrenegade
Pairing: F/K pre-slash
Rating: PG-13
Length: about 1300 words
Why I'm reccing this fic: Sometimes a hint of all the hilarious and terrifying potential of a scenario is better than watching everything play out. I definitely wouldn't object to a follow-up to this story, but imagining the trouble RayK and Fraser can get into while waiting for the effects of a mystical doodad to wear off is plenty of fun on its own.

Title: Into A Far Country
Author: [livejournal.com profile] keerawa
Pairing: Fraser/RayK
Rating: PG13
Length: 9k
Why I'm reccing this fic: because [livejournal.com profile] keerawa creates a moody, dark world in which the lines between real and magical have blurred and shifted. She gives us this story of Ray and Fraser, together but not, with Fraser damaged almost beyond recovery and Ray trying so hard to overcome that, but afraid. Afraid, but trying anyway, even when he's clearly in over his head.

A brief excerpt )

Into A Far Country

Title: Little Boy Lost
Author: [livejournal.com profile] phenyx_tp
Pairing: Fraser, RayK, RayV
Rating: G
Length: 3,690 words
Why I'm reccing this fic: because this story is a bittersweet tale of loss, of grief, and of healing. Little Boy Lost tells the story of a transformed Fraser and the way Kowalski and Vecchio deal with the transformation, each trying to do their best for Fraser, trying hard to do the right thing each in their own way. This is also a story that showcases the instinctive understanding of Fraser that RayK has, which makes them such a powerful duet.

Title: Les Revenants
Author: [livejournal.com profile] simplystars
Pairing: Fraser/RayK
Rating: R
Length: 3,4450 words
Why I'm reccing this fic: because I have a soft spot for zombie movies and this is what a due South zombie movie would be like. This story is written by [livejournal.com profile] simplystars's dark twin, the one who rips your heart out, stomps on it, brushes off the dust and hands it back to you. Bleak and real, this story moves along at a breakneck pace, never giving you a moment to catch your breath. Ray's narrative is matter of fact and to the point, but in the back of your mind is the itchy feeling that Ray's not looking too carefully at what is happening because he's afraid that if he does, he will start screaming and never stop. And he can't afford to do that.

Why I'm reccing this fic: It's wing!fic and yes some have to get used to the whole concept but... This is dS and it seems like everything goes ::smiles::.
This story is a lovely written piece of Ray telling, or better showing, that he has wings, and, of course, Fraser doesn't care much...

"I've got wings!" I shout it out loud in frustration, as Fraser moves back slightly but doesn't let go. He's still afraid that I'll fall, and that makes two of us. "Don't you see I got wings?"

Fraser's confused now, honest-to-God confused like I'm not speaking English. "I see, Ray."

"Yeah, okay. You see. Don't you got anything to say?"

That screeching sound you hear is me skidding across the floor after I ran home from work at lunch to try to squeak in under the wire to make sure I get to rec this podfic. I had a lot of trouble deciding, and in the end I settled on making a single rec, the audiofic I feel captures the elements I love the most.

Title: Ich Weiß Nicht (the Eins, Zwei, Drei remix)
Author: [livejournal.com profile] isiscolo
Reader: isiscolo
Pairing: Frannie/M, RayK/M, implied RayK/Fraser
Rating: R
Length: 15 minutes
Why I'm reccing this podfic: Isis wrote a wonderful remix of a wonderful story that mixes up many elements...misunderstanding, longing, and epiphany. This story has a little of everyting...Frannie, Ray, and Frannie and Ray with someone other than Fraser, and yet it all ends up being about Fraser. Isis is one of the strongest readers we are lucky to have in Due South fandom, and this reading is smooth, well done, and very nicely produced. She had assistance from a German speaking man, and I appreciated the extra dramatic aspect of a second character voice.

Ich Weiß Nicht (the Eins, Zwei, Drei remix)

I'm posting this a teensy bit late, but it was very difficult for me! There are so many great podficcers in this fandom, I wanted to include everything! Three? Three was painful to me. As Ande says, these aren't my favorites, for it was impossible to narrow that list down to three, but they are beautiful readings of some wonderful stories:

Title: Two Solitudes
Author: [livejournal.com profile] nos4a2no9
Reader: [livejournal.com profile] lamentables
Pairing: Fraser/Kowalski
Rating: NC-17
Length: 35 minutes
Why I'm reccing this podfic: [livejournal.com profile] lamentables perfectly captures the slightly melancholy tone of this beautiful first-time story, and her reading is very relaxed and assured. When I listen to this, it's as if my body is breathing one big sigh of contentment. The pace is perfect, [livejournal.com profile] lamentables has a very pleasant voice (and accent, yay!) and she gives very good Fraser. If you listen, be sure to let her know what you thought. I would love to encourage her to record more for us.

Title: East O' The Sun, West O' The Moon
Author: [livejournal.com profile] hth_the_first
Reader: [livejournal.com profile] nos4a2no9
Pairing: Fraser/Kowalski
Rating: NC-17
Length: 53 minutes
Why I'm reccing this podfic: I love this story, and [livejournal.com profile] nos4a2no9's voice really seems to suit it. I love her as Fraser. She's wonderful at articulating his personality with her voice. The reading is also very smooth and self-assured, and just exactly the right pace for me. And, sorry if this is TMI, but Nos really rocks the sexy-bits...Mmmmm.

Title: The Course
Author: [livejournal.com profile] thisisbone and [livejournal.com profile] cimmerians
Reader: [livejournal.com profile] luzula
Pairing: Fraser/Kowalski
Rating: NC-17
Length: 4 hours
Why I'm reccing this podfic: [livejournal.com profile] luzula does an excellent job of quietly articulating the emotional tone of a story. She doesn't push too hard on it, leaves room for the reader's interpretation, but the feelings of the characters still come through loud and clear. I love all of her podfic, so I really had a hard time choosing, and I can't even really call any particular one my favorite, but in this one, I love what she's done to differentiate between Ray and Fraser. And, well, it's such a fun story! I love to listen to it.

Author: [livejournal.com profile] llassah
Reader: [livejournal.com profile] zabira
Fandom: Hard Core Logo
Pairing: Billy/Joe
Rating: PG13
Length: 8 minutes
Why I'm reccing this fic:
Because I love Hard Core Logo stories that show what happens to the band after Joe is gone. This is such a lyrical story and [livejournal.com profile] llassah is such a talented writer. Add [livejournal.com profile] zabira to the mix and you've got a well-read powerful story that rips your heart out and then kisses you on the cheek in apology.

Title: Gun, With Occasional Kangaroo: A Love Story
Author: [livejournal.com profile] runpunkrun
Reader: [livejournal.com profile] zabira
Fandom: due South
Pairing: Fraser/RayK
Rating: PG
Length: 79 minutes
Why I'm reccing this fic:
Two words: Luc Laberteaux. This story is so weirdly funny that I listen to it whenever I need cheering up. Fraser is at his freakest and there are so many little touches that are guaranteed to bring a smile to your face. [livejournal.com profile] zabira's sunny voice adds another layer of fun. This is the podfic I would take to the bar to get drunk with.

Why I'm reccing this fic:
Because sci-fi is the heart of what I am. And combining sci-fi with due South seems to be an almost impossible task, but [livejournal.com profile] troyswann pulled it off impressively. And then [livejournal.com profile] zabira added her talent and you have a richly satisfyingly epic tale in a beautifully realized world.

Title: Con Job
Author/reader: [livejournal.com profile] keerawa
Pairing: Fraser/RayK, RayK/OMC
Rating: NC17
Length: 32 minutes / 22MB / 5300 words

Why I'm reccing this podfic: This is an angsty story about what being undercover means to Ray K. The insights about how Ray prepares himself for being someone else are wonderful; I tend to forget that Ray is undercover as Vecchio, canonically, and that the way he approaches Fraser must be colored by this. I also really like the ending, which is not precisely happy, but I enjoy endings which are not precisely happy.

The reading is very well done. Keerawa has a pleasant voice, reads slowly, and infuses each line with meaning and energy. The individual characters come across clearly, including Ray-as-Ray and Ray-as-Gary both. The porn is quite sexy, and perhaps listening to this story while grocery shopping was not the smartest idea I've ever had.

I mostly prefer to rec in my own journal and on my website, but I wanted to put this one out here because it's an example of a truly outstanding reading of a due South story.

Title: Photograph
Author/reader: Giulietta ([livejournal.com profile] mondschein1)
Pairing: F/K
Rating: Not porny
Length: 7 minutes 16 seconds
Why I'm reccing this podfic: This is always the first story that comes to mind when I'm pimping podfic, and, really, this is possibly a deeply flawed strategy. Because this story is heartbreaking and the reading makes me cry every time. Photograph was maybe the first dS podfic I listened to and I wasn't sure I could buy an amateur female reader voicing first-person Fraser narration. I bought it, I buy it, I am SOLD. Gah, this story. It defies reason: as a rule, I dislike music under the reading; here it is wonderful and devastating. Most of us fumble around a bit when starting out recording podfic; this was her very first and it's absolutely stellar. Not only is the story superb and the recording technically solid, but she reads it beautifully, with powerful, utterly convincing emotion. So, yes. RATHER A LOT OF LOVE HERE.

Title: An awkward moment is to be savored
Author: [livejournal.com profile] snoopypez
Pairing: Fraser/Vecchio
Rating: NC-17
Length: 1102
Why I'm reccing this fic: Because this fic is amazing! It starts off as a cute, wacky little fic about Fraser and Vecchio's first few dates and then it makes you wibble and then all of a sudden there is HOT SMOKING SEX. And there is a line, towards the end of the fic, that I am not going to quote because I don't want to spoil you, but it is my favorite sentence I've read in MONTHS. Seriously guys, this fic is deceptively simple and short but there's a lot of awesome and complex stuff packed into a small space--the guys are just so blindingly THEMSELVES, cute and dorky and then all of a sudden they sucker punch you with just how badly they need each other.

A brief excerpt )

"An awkward moment is to be savored."
[identity profile] andeincascade.livejournal.com
I LOVE being read to and always have. For years I have made the 12-hour drive between the Twin Cities and Detroit to do the family thing and have relied on Books-on-Tape for company. Once I started reading a lot of fanfic that is what I wanted in the car as well. Podfic is like a dream come true for me. We have the best writers in ds6d, the best podficcers and we have a lot to choose from.

I've heard some people comment that because they are fast readers the pace of podfic would drive them crazy. I actually find the reverse is true. Reducing the pace of the story to that of spoken word allows me to sink into the tale more deeply and the emotional punch of the story is much greater. I love that!

These are not my three favorite podfics. It's virtually impossible to choose. It's like asking what my favorite chocolate is. Answer: whatever is in my mouth at the time. *g* These ARE three recordings I love dearly, listen to often and highly recommend for anyone wanting to sample the wealth of dS podfic. I tired to choose fics that are relatively short and representative of what's available. So here are three great writers read by three great readers.

Title: Flying Blind
Author: Speranza [livejournal.com profile] cesperanza
Reader: Slidellra [livejournal.com profile] slidellra
Pairing: F/K
Rating: PG-13
Length: 52 minutes
Why I'm reccing this podfic: Ces is revered in every fandom she touches and with good reason; she's a brilliant writer. There are a lot of recordings of her stories and I highly recommend that you download and enjoy each and every one of them. This recording is really special. I spent a lot of time at [livejournal.com profile] bitchinparty stalking following Sli like a puppy telling Slidellra how much I loved this podfic but it didn't occur to me until I got home that I never told her why. Simply put, she is a sensual, evocative reader with an OMG amazing voice who makes you FEEL the story. I point you to the bath scene. When Kowalski gets out of that tub you can smell his shampoo and sense the damp warmth emanating from his skin. It's a gorgeous reading.

Title: The Art of Losing
Author: China Shop [livejournal.com profile] china_shop
Reader: Nos4a2no9 [livejournal.com profile] nos4a2no9
Pairing: F/K, F/V
Rating: NC-17
Length: 20 minutes
Why I'm reccing this podfic: I resisted downloading this podcast for a long time. I love this story, it's amazing, but it's a story that rips my heart out, stomps it and leaves it in pieces on the ground. Factoring the emotional effect of having it read and the fact that Nos had done the reading, I figured I'd be pretty much cinderized. But, in the end, that's also what made it irresistable. This story contains one of the most hauntingly definitive lines of Fraser dialogue ever and Nos is definitely your go-to gal when you need a good, restorative catharsis. And I was decimated, but oh, what a beautiful way to die. I weep and weep every single time.

Title: The Cold Equations
Author: Arrow [livejournal.com profile] arrow00
Reader: Zabira [livejournal.com profile] zabira
Pairing: F/K
Rating: NC-17
Length: 19 minutes
Why I'm reccing this podfic: I have a special affection for this story. Back in the day - which seems an awfully long time ago but really isn't - when I was just starting to read Kowalski and still wasn't sure I'd be able to swing both Rays, this was one of a handful of stories that really made me "get" him. It was quite a while before I realized it was written by the same Arrow I knew and loved from her TS fic. Here we have it read by the wonderful Zabira. One really can't say too much about Z. She voices Fraser and Ray very distinctly and consistently, the quality of her recordings is top notch and she's prolific as hell. She makes every story she records come alive and we are so fucking lucky to have her.

Length: ~14,400 words
Why I'm reccing this fic: A sea cruise fic! (Not to be confused with a certain other fantabulous cruiseliner fic, which I don't think I can rec because it's an RPS crossover?) Anyway, here's a chance to see Fraser and Ray on the way to Acapulco, with shorts and sandals on, sipping fruity rum drinks, and playing shuffleboard. Hee! Somewhere amidst the karaoke and the dirty old ladies after Fraser's body, the guys stumble across a mystery, and eventually each other. Shipboard romance for the win!

Title: Sempervirens
Author: DancesWithChopstick ([livejournal.com profile] danceswchopstck)
Pairing: gen, Fraser & Kowalski friendship
Rating: PG-13
Length: ~5,500 words
Why I'm reccing this fic: A wonderful epistolary fic--the exchange of letters after the adventure and Fraser has moved back to Canada. After an event gone bad, Ray quits the CPD and travels to Arizona and California, sharing his experiences and emotions with Fraser. Fraser's support is rock-solid throughout. An absolute highlight is Ray's report of taking a job as a substitute teacher, and the speech he gives his kids the first day of Civics class. Truly fabulous character voices and friendship fic.

Rating: NC-17
Length: 189K
Why I'm reccing this fic: You know, I think this story was posted the same week this challenge opened. I love all of blg's long stories, and a lot of it is that I love how her Vecchio feels about her Kowalski. In this story, Vecchio and Kowalski have an extended road trip around eastern North America in a quest after the McGuffin Fraser, staying in skanky motels and fucking a lot. And how awesome is it that Fraser gets relegated to McGuffin?

Why I'm reccing this fic: Victoria is captured, and everyone, from Vecchio to Welsh to Dief, warns Ray that she makes Fraser crazy. And indeed she does. Fraser suddenly decides that the world is his oyster, and that he's going to start making up for lost time. Ray gets dragged along on a long, strange, sexually rambunctious road trip.
