Title: Lucky Hat
Author:
shoemaster
Pairing: Fraser/RayK
Rating: PG
Length: 1100 words
Why I'm reccing this fic: This cute, funny little post-COTW story is based on the prompt 'August 4-7 Midnight Sun Slo-Pitch Tourney', an (actual) Inuvik event. That's right – Ray plays baseball. Again, only this time his team knows who he is.
I'm not sure I can explain why I love this so much, except that it's fresh and simple and stealth-sweet, stealth-everything. It even made me get why people like established relationship fic. It includes a first-time flashback, which always helps, but really, the payoff here is the present day – getting a quick look at that happy ending I never really managed to picture, but it's totally real here: still a bit rickety and suspenseful and sexy, but also cheerful and ordinary and settled. It starts out quiet and laidback and then the little details pile on faster and faster until suddenly you believe completely in this town, this life, this baseball game, and this happy ending.
...
As one of the few American émigrés living in Inuvik, and the only one with the very public position of Benton Fraser’s American partner, it is Ray’s responsibility to uphold his country’s honor when it comes to baseball. Or softball.
Needless to say, the pressure is on.
But see, Ray has his lucky hat.
It’s the hat he was wearing when he hit the homerun in Willison; the hat he was wearing that day the summer after Franklin’s hand, almost six years ago now.
